Charlotte NC Golf

Time for another trip, which means time to see some new golf courses... this time I am visiting a friend in Charlotte and have the chance to play 2-3 course in that area.  My friend works at the Carmel CC, so one round will be there... he has also mentioned Quail Hollow, Longview and Firethorn as other possible options.  These are all fairly new courses, but I would like to see some of the older classic courses, maybe some notable architects that I don't get see in CA.... like Ross, Tillinghast, Raynor.

Hope to catch some feedback on the course mentioned and also what courses you have enjoyed in the area.  Thanks!

Carolina Golf Club (Ross /Spence)
Depending on how far from Charlotte you would want to drive there are many other options.

Charlotte Golf Links is an early Doak and it is a public course.

Mike, 78 miles north in High Point is an early Pete Dye called Oak Hollow that is a blast to play and inexpensive.
Has some great holes and some cool quirk!

Honestly, Mike, if you can make the connection, I'd tell you to drive the 80 minutes north to Winston-Salem to play Old Town.  It's tough to get on, but absolutely worth it.  Perry Maxwell design, great piece of land, really private, really golden age, really fun.

I had a great time at Carolina Golf Club and would think that the same GCA guys/members at Carolina would host you.  It too is golden age and fun.

Carmel's South Course is closed for renovation/public works so only the North Course is open.  I like the North in part because it has more quirky holes than South. 

The best three courses in CLT are Quail, Charlotte CC and Carolina GC.  Next is Myer's Park CC (Ross) and, 45 minutes away, Irish Creek (DL3).  No Raynor in CLT but perhaps some Tilly left in Rock Hill.  Doak's Charlotte Golf Links is flat but fun.  Longview is an $$ club to join but I don't think it's a particularly interesting course.  I do also like Carolina Lakes, a public located in a Del Webb community down the road.

Matt,I can't remember which course is which.One has a very short par 3 at the turn.Seems like the other course is the older of the two.I have killed a little time at the chipping green at Carmel.

That's likely the North Course, a flat par 3 with water surrounding the middle and right side of green.

Back when I was at Davidson College, we used to play the Mooresville municipal.  Not too intriguing from an architectural perspective, but great people, about $11 a round, and they look the other way if you want to load your golf bag with a case of beer. ;)
