Full of what, - hard to understand that last word, I know it starts with S but does not end with h, so a little confused, perhaps surprised even ;)

Wonderful reading, thanks much David.

I am not even all that interested in ever playing hickory golf, but found the articles just first rate.

I particularly enjoyed learning about Freddie Tait -- and the tribute that the working men of St Andrews gave him.

I had a call from Lionel this aftenoonr and we should expect much more. Those with a few years under their belt may remember Lionel as a past Secretary and Treasurer of Musselburgh, so has a depth of knowledge, respect and certainly contacts.

Keep an eye out for the next issue(s) as it is only going to improve.

Melvyn,

You haven't paying enough attention. David reads the whole internet every day. The find was just a small discovery in his world.

Tait was a well-respected figure and a great golfer before going to fight and die in the Boer War. He was well missed by all and a great loss to golf. One wonders what he would have achieved had he lived.

David, I played my hickories this morning. I played thru two groups who were very intrigued. They were also surprised when I carried a dune 190 yards of the tee with my wood clerk!

More are taken up Hickory as no limitation on ball travel by the R&A.  Hickory still offers all the fun and magic of the game. See a video clip of The St Andrews Golf Company on Home of Golf TV link http://www.homeofgolf.tv/2009/03/02/st-andrews-golf-company-episode-3/

Keep up the good work and more so keep enjoying the game.

I certainly do not read the whole internet everyday, only about one-third of it! ;)

I found the link to www.hickoryworldgolfer.com at: www.scottishgolfview.com
That is a website I do look at once or twice a week during the summer.

Thanks Melvyn. You are so right. Everyone in the group enjoyed every good shot I hit. One guy kept shaking his head that my wood cleek could go as far as his 450cc driver.

Cheers, Mike

How did the "clerk" feel about that?

Played hickory golf this afternoon.

Used replica 1885 clubs and a two golf balls...gutta percha (these specific ones...http://www.playhickory.com/golfballs_2.htm), and The White Flyer from the same manufacturer (I think this is supposed to replicate the bramble ball).

With the driver/play club...

The gutta percha shots went on average 150ish off the tee with perfect hits going 170ish.

The White Flyer (bramble balls) went 210 on average and I nuked on about 240.

As an FYI, I hit my r9 driver with modern balls 230 to 250 off the tee on average with perfect shots going 270ish.

For what it is worth, there it is.

For what it was worth, I took the golf balls mentioned in the above post and hit'em with a modern r9 driver during my round after work.

I nutted each drive and the gutta went 170, the bramble 260, the modern ball went 280.

FYI.

Combined with the last post, this tells me almost all the distance increase is the ball.  News flash, huh?
