Thank you for posting this David.  I hope you and Lauren are well.

Last summer my wife and I were introduced to the Matheson family by our wonderful friend, Bill Gifford.  We got along instantly.  We played many rounds of golf with Kevin and spent many hours visiting Sandy and Dona.  Our most unforgetable time was spent watching the final round of the Open with the Mathesons, Curtis Behrent, and Joe Lafferty at the Matheson's house.  Sandy was so sure Tom would pull it off, and like everyone else, we were all deflated when he did not.

We did not make it to Dornoch this summer for the first time in six years.   However, we were glad to have Kevin as our guest for a week earlier this month.  We were able to play five wonderful courses.  I told him the next best thing to visiting Dornoch would be for Dornoch to visit us.  Kevin and I shared stories and talked fondly about his dad.  It is unfortunate he was lost so close to the return of his son's wonderful trip.

Not only are Mr. Behrent's words testimony to how loved Sandy was, oceans were crossed by some to pay their final respects.

On an old golfing video of mine there is a classic interview with Sandy where he recounts the tale of one particularly long and arduous round with four visiting golfers.  After six or more hours of trudging around Dornoch the group finally reach the 18th.  Sandy's golfer turns to him and asks, "Well Sandy, are you tired?"  Sandy replys in an instant, "No, sir.  Homesick!"

RIP Sandy.

Sandy was a classic, Scottish caddie of the old school. I first met "Pipey" in 1998, when I , and two other Pebble Beach caddies at the time, went up there in late October after our competition with the St. Andrew's caddies had concluded.

He was pretty much retired from caddying by then, though he would go out, with aid of a buggy, on rare occasions, with longtime clients during important competitions. What a character. His wit, laugh and wry smile were priceless. A superb storyteller, he always had fresh material. My wife, who is from there, and I would always stop by his house for a visit when we were over. Sadly, we hadn't gotten over this year and have only our fond memories of him to cherish.

The game needs, and will dearly miss Sandy "Pipey" Matheson! His type give the game its human soul. Having someone like Sandy take you around a great course, like Royal Dornoch, made the experience so much richer. This is why caddie golf needs better support and nurturing... without it we lose that tremendous source of the games differencemakers, that human dimension so constant in golf's history and evolution. Sandy helped instill that love for the game in his son Kevin, who is a fine player. Dona and the Matheson family certainly will cherish all that golf has given to them and that Sandy tried to give back in his own unique way.

R.I.P Sandy! You were a legend and you can be sure we will never forget you. I for one, will always toast you with a dram, whenever I'm in Dornoch!

Cheers and tears,

Kris
"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak
