Ridgewood (a photo tour) New
« on: August 25, 2010, 11:19:41 AM »
Pressed for time but I would like to put up a photo tour of the Championship Course at Ridgewood, site of the PGA tourney this week.  These come from an early June visit this year.

1.  Par 4 (380 yards).

2.  Slightly downhill par 3 (190 yards).

3.  A wonderful par 5 (588 yards, named Gorilla!) with a great green.

4.  A dogleg-left par 4 (444 yards).

5.  Wonderful short par 4 (291 yards) known as "five and dime".

6.  Long, slight dogleg-left par 4 (471 yards).

7.  A par 5 for the members, but played up a tee box for the tourney and as a par 4 (447 yards).

8.  Downhill par 3 (217 yards).

9.  An uphill par 4 (440 yards).

Back nine later.  Enjoy the front nine!   ;D

Great pictures - I played 18 there this summer  - I forget what 2 nines.  I do not recognize some of the holes.  Do they play a composite of all 3 nines for the tournament?  Thanks

It's a Jersey gem.  Can't wait to see it on television this weekend.

I like how many of the tee shots require the player to do something off the tee -- fade, draw, and notably with 5&10 make a big decision on club choice.

Yes.  Here is the routing of the composite course:

I thought #3 was a very cool hole in person.  I love how the fairway just ends in a rough area strewn with mounding.  Actually, this could be a model as to how to affect the long ball without adding length.

(Joe - you're an amazing photographer.  And to do this while playing!)

Boy would it be neat if all courses had as nifty as this ~40 page document with great photos like Ridgewood does.  Download this PDF to your computer and enjoy!  And if any of you have Jim Furyk's e-mail, send him the link as he has plenty of time to peruse it since he's been dq'ed already from the tourney for oversleeping his pro-am time!

Ridgewood has been in the shadow of Baltusrol, Winged Foot and Bethpage Black for many years since those courses have hosted televised tournaments for some time.

Ridgewood is a terrific golf course, an underrated golf course.

Unfortunately the photos don't catch the elevation changes the contour and slope of the greens.

I think Ridgewood has the best set of par 5's found almost anywhere.
3 E, 2C, 4C, 4 W and 8W are fabulous par 5's with 4C probably being the weakest of a very, very strong group.

There's plenty of variety at Ridgewood with dogleg lefts, dogleg rights, straight, uphill, downhill, and the putting surfaces and surrounds are terrific.

Years ago, it was strictly a spring and fall course due to the dense surrounding canopy and the difficulties they had in maintaining the course in the summer.  But, that's all changed now.

When most people play Ridgewood, they never see the real back tees like on 4W, 7W and 1E.

It's unfortunate that 2C can't be lengthened more.
It's a great par 5 for amateurs, but a new forward tee has been created to make it a par 4.
That's a hard green to hit with a wedge let alone a mid to long iron.

For years you could call Ridgewood a hidden gem, but, TV is going to change all of that.

For all the negatives associated with a course becoming a PGA Tour venue, the TV exposure and publicity sure help the membership waiting list.

Bill Brightly interviewing J.B. Holmes on Tillinghast architecture today during the pro am:

Me: So J.B., how do you like the course?

J.B.:  It's really wet. (It rained all last night and all morning...)

Me: How about the style, is it different than what you usually play on tour?

J.B.:  Not really.

Me: Ok, thanks J.B.

10.  The back nine begins with a very tough par 3 (230 yards).

11.  Very long, dogleg-left par 4 (467 yards), playing uphill to a plateau green.

12.  For the members this is a 556 yards par 5, but in the Barclay it is a 475 yard par 4, gently uphill for the first ~250 yards, then an approach shot to an elevated green.

13.  Healthy little par 5 (626 yards).   :)

14.  Real nice par 4 (412 yards) with a demanding approach shot.

15.  Slightly uphill par 3 (155 yards) to a heavily bunkered green.

16.  A good drive here on this 422 yard par 4 will leave a short blind approach shot to a green sitting down below the fairway.

17.  Another superb par 5 (594 yards), dogleg-left.

18.  (the camera and/or my brain got a bit tired so a couple out of focus here)  The closing hole is a dogleg-right par 4 (470 yards).

That's all folks!  I hope these pics might help you enjoy the tourney a bit more this week.

Joe, another fantastic tour.  I don't know that I have any pictures that add to what Joe has already posted.  But anyone interested can look at them individually using this link and advancing them by clicking the "Next" button (click on the magnifying glass for a larger size)... http://www.flickr.com/photos/eko_gfl/4817455158/in/set-72157624430438281/ ... or in a slideshow here... http://www.flickr.com/photos/eko_gfl/sets/72157624430438281/show/

Hey Mike , haven't played Ridgewood in over twenty five years , and remember that I thoroughly enjoyed it !  Pictures look good, although the cart path on two is quite prominent . Figure you'll get that fixed .

Archie,

Come by anytime to play. Please note that all of Joe's pictures were taken almost 2 years before any work was done.

And yes, the carts paths on 2 are on the Iist to be addressed.

Cheers, Mike

Tillinghast always looks so right to my eye. Simply what a good course should look like.
