yes (the non-white one!)

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

How would you describe the general character of the greens (size, use of contours etc)?

Pretty big greens for sure, with good contouring.  Not over the top, but I think just right.

Now on a shortie par 4 like the 15th, the green is much more appropriately sized (read:  small!) and devilish!

Since the day of golf was wonderful, the 11 hour ride gets a Doak rating of maybe a 4... if the course stunk, a Doak zero.   ;) ;D

Despite the overcast skies, the photos turned out great.  Glad you played well too!  It must be nice to have a chauffeur drive you down there!

When I asked if I could drive, Mike quipped "do you drive a car any better than you drive a golf ball?".  I snapped "Thanks Moriarty".

Thanks for the pictures; seems like we have some great pictorials going right now.  Couple of questions:

How did you play #2?  I've played Kinloch 3 times and haven't figured out what the right play off the tee is.

Several terrific holes out there.  Any particular favorites?  I really liked 6, 11, and 14.

One of the most striking aspects of Kinloch in pictures, to me, is the amount of restraint Lester used in the design.  I see a lot of fairways and green complexes where there is just gently sloping rough off the short grass.  Not chocolate-drop mounds, not excess bunkers.  It gives the course a quiet look, to me.  I like it.

I agree Phil Owenby is world class!  He is a man we should all strive to emulate.  Wonderful man with a great family.

One of my favorite memories is carding an eagle 2 on hole 6.  We didn't see it go in due to the elevation but the grounds crew member made a big scene.  It will always be a cherished moment at a spectacular place.

Thank you for reminding me of why this is one of my favorite courses.

How did you play #2?

From the middle tees I hit a drive to the left fw leaving a sw into the back right pin position.  Make a 10 foot putt... an easy hole.   ;) ;D

Here was a hole that I think would play much differently from a longer tee.

Let me reiterate what has already been said about Phil's being an absolute A-1 class act.

I played here yesterday, and am thinking about the comments about restraint.  I don't think I played more than 2 cups of break on a single putt...I may have under-read one or two, but that's pretty remarkable on a modern course.

1.  Phil Owenby shared a story about his days on the N.C. State golf team in the mid 1970s.  Played against Curtis, Jay, David Thore and other Wake Forest immortals.

2.  Kinloch was my Augusta National.  I anticipate (have I said this before on this forum?) never playing Augusta, so I imagine that what I had at Kinloch (attention to detail, proper amount of humility when dealing with all the money around that place, care of caddies, chefs, grounds crew, professional staff) comes close to what happens along Washington Road.

3.  Number 2 hole...bashed driver over bunkers, thinned half-wedge off back of green, chipped back, two putted for bogey.  That's one way to play the hole.

4.  Short par four...which hole was that?  Hit driver to back front edge (no, not an oxymoron, call it right front edge if you like) and lagged eagle putt to within one inch on left.  Almost made a memory.

5.Only hole I couldn't figure out was #9, also the only hole I doubled on my way to a three-birdie 78.

6.  19th hole was fun.

7.  Greens never break what you think they will, and NEVER inside six feet.  Play those mid-shorties inside the cup.

8.  Great driving course.  Hit the big club all day long.

I don't often get the opportunity to play at private clubs such as Kinloch, but did a few years ago. I would definitely drive all night while wearing a coffee-soaked shirt to play there again.

Tim, I agree with your observation that the design is subtle and only includes as many bunkers as necessary.  Sort of like an Ernest Hemingway style golf course!

I've never had the pleasure of visiting, but the pics convey a wonderful sense of expansiveness. I'm cool with F&F/brown, but immaculate turf conditions like that aren't too bad either.
Fare and be well now, let your life proceed by its own design.

Hi Jeff,

There are some situations where there is a lot of break.  You can see a big breaker on perhaps half the holes.  Perhaps once or twice a round I find myself putting to a "fall line", but in general the putts are very straight, fast and true.

The reason there wasn’t any break is because the greens were probably rolling about a 8.5 when they usually roll 13+.  It is my understanding that the greens were designed to be “pinnable” but blazing fast.  They are relatively flat, but i have played 20 feet of break dozens and dozens of times on putts out there.

Its been a hot summer, and while the greens are very healthy, the grass is just longer than usual.  Come back about the third week of October to see if you play any break on the greens.
