Okay, I will bite... How can you critique a course without playing it or seeing it?  From what others had to say about it?

Well, maybe not the whole course or layout. But the courses played on tour, I think you can critique an individual hole or set-up. I was quite 'vocal' about Pebble Beach during the US Open and how I felt the set-up was ridiculous in a few cases.. Perhaps not a critique of the whole course, just one hole and its set-up within the microcosm of the US Open Championship. One of my key points was how I felt it was not 'natural' that professionals were unable to get a ball within 20 feet of the hole on 7 (Dustin Johnson's miss-hit that he was obviously worried would end up in the bunker not withstanding). Same about the set-up on 14. I guess my comments were not so much to say the architecture itself was inferior, but that the tournament set-up was inferior.

hmmm.  I've seen it done....now many times it is done in a manner where the person has been on this site long enough that he has convinced himself he has played it...then he remembers.... ;D  or you can play it on the video games....

That is funny :-) - but probably sad also because it is true.

I just wouldn't do that Mike, and I never have. THAT is the fundamental problem I have with Tom MacWood on here---eg he both critiques the architecture of and the recorded histories of courses and clubs he has never even been to or seen. I wish you and more on here would call him out on that!

And with that one comment, a thread that had slight potential to be something decent went straight down the toilet. This will probably run 20 pages just because of that one comment. OH JOY.  ::)

Apparently you can judge a course and decide you never want to play it because you've already "seen" it thanks to HD Television. ::) :) ;)

You guys are pikers, I once wired $4K to a guy I've never met on the other side of the world for a course I still haven't seen.

THAT, my friends, is drinking the Kool Aid.

 :)

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

A whole bunch of them. Generally on the basis of photographs. Bear in mind that critique does not merely mean to enumerate the course's shortcomings.

I believe that photographs can offer meaningful information about a golf course. I realize that there are those who feel the opposite. We'll have to agree to disagree on this point.

Wasn't that bad in late May ...... except for my chat with the owner.   >:( :P

My fancy private club friends much preferred Longshadow, in its current state of genteel shabbiness, to Great Waters which we played the next day.
