At first glance of the title, I thought this may be a thread on Reading CC.

This question comes up here about once a year, or more, and everyone is always trying to sound smart and come up with reasons why.

Why does a cook burn the soup? If the cook says “with this stove I have to burn the soup” and you buy it, then eat burned soup and learn to like it.

If the pool is never clean and the pool guy says “the chemicals I use don't work all that well but that's the way it is” and you buy it, then swim in dirty water.

Bad cup cutting, poor set ups, shrinking greens...blah blah blah. Folks there are a lot of very good golf course superintendents out there. I was watching the Michigan/Notre Dame football game, a very entertaining game BTW, and was struck by the difference great schools use to hire Head Coaches vs. how most clubs hire a super. Both those coaches had worked there way up starting as a HC at a smaller school, building successful programs and continuing to climb the coaching ladder based on RESULTS.

Hire your superintendents using the same criteria instead of focusing on where they went to school or where they interned or where they spent a year as a 2nd assistant riding a spray tank and you'll not have problems like bad set ups and shrinking greens. Hire guys with a proven track record of providing positive results day in and day out and you’ll spend your golfing time playing a well cared for course instead of wondering why another problem has popped up.

Don,
Well said, nothing more to add from here, your conclusions are correct and we can put this thread to bed!
