Moundbuilders - Newark, OH
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:33:39 PM »
My curiosity got the best of me today as I made my way home through Newark, OH...I just had to take a quick detour to see Moundbuilders CC.  It has briefly been mentioned on this site for its quirk.  For those not familiar, it is a Thomas Bendelow design that was routed through ancient Indian mounds.  They have a small tower near the parking lot for the public to get a quick peek...just enough to wet my appetite!

In searching for additional information about the course, I stumbled upon some old aerial photos which indicated some fantastic bunkering which seems to have diminished over time.  Does anyone have in depth knowledge of the history of this course?  Can anyone describe the playing characteristics?

I believe that the course has an agreement to maintain and protect the mounds. Did you take any pictures?

Brian-Moundbuilders is a unique golf course. The holes that play through the mounds provide some interesting shots...especially if you end up just short of them. Unfortunately, beyond that Moundbuilders is a decent but not all that compelling golf course. To me, one of the better holes is one removed from the ornamental mounds. On the back nine, there is a short par three that plays uphill to a green cut into a hillside. The right side of the green falls away to a severe slope. It is a very natural looking and fun hole. The site itself, as you would imagine, is fairly flat where the mounds are located. There is a bit of movement in the land in the Northwest portion of the course as you approach a creek that effects a couple of holes. The club website has the following historical section, which indicates that some modifications of several original holes took place in the late 1960's. I hope the link works: http://www.moundbuilderscc.com/Files/The%20Golf%20Course.pdf
