Oxmoor and other golf in Kentucky? near Louisville

Got a client from Louisville that wants me to come out for some golf too...what do y'all know about Oxmoor?  Any other suggestions besides Valhalla and Old Silo?

If you can get on (it's private) there is a very fun 9 hole course called Owl Creek.

While the list of people who don't like Art Hills is long, I though Persimmon Ridge was pretty good. Hard, but some cool holes.

Golf courses here have been HAMMERED by the weather. Apparently, a number of courses have lost greens, including Valhala. The temperature barely dips below 80 in the evenings and the humidity is repressive. That said, when are you planning on heading down this way?

The weather has been horrible here, worst in a long time.  As far as Valhalla goes there are a couple of greens that are extremely stressed but all greens have actually been improving over the last 2 months while other courses in the area have been going the other way.  There are rumors going around that Valhalla has holes closed, temporary greens and the like but they are untrue.  All 18 holes were open as of yesterday.

In Louisville- Hurstbourne, Big Spring, and Louisville CC are quite good.

I would not go to Old Silo, unless you are just interested in seeing the design.  It is good, not great, in my opinion, and in very rough shape.

A round at Idle Hour in Lexington, an old Ross redone about 5 years ago, is definitely worth the trip.

On a side note, I'd be glad to host you at my club, Greenbrier, in Lexington.  It is a Dye routing that Newcombe finished.  Good, not great, but fun to play.

    Old Silo is quite a drive from Louisville. Big Spring is one of my favorites in the state. Be glad to host you at Campbellsville Country Club, but Matt's offer is much better.

Around Louisville, I've really only played Heritage Hill, a fairly recent Doug Beach (former Nicklaus associate) design. Decent public option if you don't have access to the decent mix of privates in the area.

Criss is right, Heritage Hill is a good public option. Only played it once, but enjoyed it and would go back. Wish you had more time Jay, there is some fun golf out in the Bluegrass state. I really like Dale Hollow but it is about two and a half hours from Louisville.

Then which one os the Pete Dye course in KY?

Jay,

He has two that I know of, Kearney Hill and Peninsula. Both are in the Lexington area. Kearney Hill is closer to town and is generally in better shape. It is on a smaller piece of property and can feel cramped in several places. Peninsula is further out of town and feels quite remote. It seems to always have conditioning issues (understated), but it is an interesting layout with a couple of standout holes. I would think Kearney is a safer bet, but if you catch Peninsula in good condition, it would be very enjoyable.

There are several other public options around Lexington as well. Cherry Blossom is ranked as the #1 Kentucky public in Golfweek. I don't understand that ranking at all, as I can name at least 6 or 7 that are better. That said, it is typically in excellent condition and has a few interesting holes mixed in with some rather mundane holes. The University Club is a nice 36 hole facility with a public track and a private track. I've got a picture thread of some of these courses going right now. Lexington is a little over 1.5 hours from Louisville and has a much better public golf scene.
