Castle Stuart Mash Note
« on: August 06, 2010, 04:19:46 PM »
From Graham Spiers "The Spike Bar" column in the 22 July issue of The Times:

"My goodness, what an exhilarating experience. Let me be bold about this to a point of risking hyperbole. Castle Stuart is the best golf course I have ever played - and I have played ‘em all, including Muirfield, the Old Course and Augusta National.

A bit like Kingsbarns, it is the natural topography and the sweeping setting that makes Castle Stuart so spectacular. There are a bunch of thrilling holes which hug the water’s edge of the Moray Firth, and others that are up “on the shelf”, from where, quite apart from the golf, the views over to Black Isle to the north and to Inverness and Beauly back west are simply stunning. I found the whole experience utterly breathtaking."

It is pretty spectacular.....not sure I would go as far as he did, but it is a special place and the course is a blast to play.

David I am a big fan of CS as you know, but you have to wonder what was featuring in the Extra's column that day to make that judgement!!

I am going to wager that Graham Spiers has not "played 'em all," since I have never heard of him.  There's a lot more out there than Augusta and The Old Course.

Tom -

That would imply that you have "heard of 'em all!"
Can we be certain that you have? ;)

"The Times" British newspaper published daily since 1785. Times journalists get treated very well so he is likely to be well played.

David:

Certain, of course not, but after 30 years in the golf business and traveling around the world, I'm usually surprised when a new name comes up.

Does anyone else here know who Mr. Spiers is?

Dan:  Thanks, don't know why I didn't think to google him.

I know he only said it's his favorite of what he's played, but claiming to have "played them all" is certainly an attempt to add extra weight to his view.  Not surprising to find that a guy who thinks Kingsbarns is the best ever is a relatively young Scot.

Speirs is a very good Scottish sports journalist who rarely covers anything but football. I seem to recall he has done the odd golf piece when the majors are on but he's certainly not known for his critique on golf course architecture.

In my mind, any good press is good for all golf courses.
