Wow, the 7th looks fantastic!

Greg, in an earlier reply you noted a revised location of the 5th and 16th greens.  Has that work been completed or is still in the planning stages?  I was last there in 2007 and both greens seemed in the same spot as my previous trips.

Tim,

Thank you. I really think the new 7th will be among the best holes on the course and certainly a "fan favorite".

16 was relocated to the very edge of the cliff above the beach in 2004. It had previously been about 20-25 yards shorter which, to be honest, boggles the mind at how that was ever allowed to happen. At the time we were introducing a new grass on the putting surfaces and thus closed for 4 months we asked Nicklaus (Jim Lipe) to revisit the location of the 16th green whcih had been moved a few years earlier by those mangaing the property at the time. Their thought process was to create room for another tee for the 17th hole which was rarely used and to be honest the 17th needed no such "improvement" particularly at the expense of another great hole. Very bad decision in my mind.

5 moving back aapprox. 40 yards is still in the approval stage though the plans are complete and would create a triumverate (5-6-7) to rival the famed 16-17-18. We may have to wait until next summer to do this as the phasing would require playing a temp green for about 3 weeks while we rework the current green site/surrounds in creating the new approach. This would be in the heart of the season and thus we may not pull the trigger just yet. When we do the tees will also shift and vastly improve the golf hole.

We are excited about all of the changes and have to give all the credit to the very talented Jim Lipe, who, as previously noted, was the only person with which we would have proceeded with the changes that had been pending for several years. Well... maybe we would have worked with Kurt Bowman but Jim's phone and fax would have been working overtime.   ;)

Sean,

Thank you for the kind words but I woudl submit that the thing that makes CDS-Ocean truly special is the fact that you play roughly 1/3 of the course in a pure desert setting, 1/3 of the course transitioning between desert and ocean and 1/3 of the course hard against the coastline.

Of course taking this

And creating this

does not hurt the cause.

Greg,

I agree. The ocean matters, Mucci be damned but the non ocean holes are excellent as well.

The view does matter. If you look at those two pics the hole looks natural. The green site doesn't look forced into the rocks.

The view does matter and standing on this tee with the waves crashing on three sides it is a near spiritual experience. By far the coolest spot on the golf course now.

What is the new green elevation above see level, 5 - 10 feet (or measure with locally available items - 6 to 8 cases of cervazes)?

What are the chances of a washout during the stormy season ?

Mike, The green is between 4.8 and 5.4 meters above sea level or 15-17 feet. As noted the highest the high tides will just touch the rocks in front of the grass which are just under 3.5 meters.

A major storm could bring water over a portion of the green but green is set in the rock bowl and thus is going nowhere during even a huge storm. The drainage has been installed in antcipation of such an event and we are comfortable that there would not be a situation where this hole would be unplayable for any extended period after a storm.

If we get the storm I will take photos as it actually makes the visual aspect of the hole even better as the water will wash out all of the sand on the beach and the rock fronting the turf continues all the way into the ocean... it is a really cool look. I will see if I can find pics from 2005 when a storm washed out the beach and exposed all of the rock.

Obviously I am excited about this hole and may be hitting the first shot there later today!

November 5, 2010 - Opening the new 7th hole.

Huge thanks to Jim Lipe, Kurt Bowman and Jerame Miller. Hard to describe how cool the new hole is.

Wish you were here!

Sorry, the orange pants and lime green shirt would taken too much away from the natural beauty in the photos.

Opening Day

Sean, in this photo you can see the old/current #7 green in the distance, the tee is at the top of the dune behind the new green. When the new 6th is ready the old/current 7th will be closed and there will be a 150 yard walk along the beach between 7 and 8.
