Great Names of Hazards and Other Features
« on: July 21, 2010, 04:26:55 PM »
On the "Valley of Sin" thread, I mentioned what a great name that is for a course feature, and listed a few others:

The Church Pews (Oakmont)

The Devil's A--hole  (Pine Valley)

Hell Bunker  (TOC)

What are some other favorites?   Photos would be appreciated!

++++

Forrest Richardson and Mark Fine's excellent book, "Bunkers, Pits & Other Hazards," would be an excellent reference on this topic, don't you wish you'd bought a copy?   ;D

The Devil's Cauldron at Banff.  It is a better name than a hazard, but it is beautiful,

I think "Big Mouth" is a nice name for the bunker right of the green on #17 at Oakmont.

All of these have religious (or close) themes -- something on your mind?!

Golf and virtue, or the lack of it, are inextricably intertwined!

I was trying to find that famous picture of the hangman's noose at Dye's Oak Tree course in Edmond, OK, but apparently it has been taken down.

The kinder, gentler Oak Tree?  That photo in the past looked like it needed buzzards circling and the sound track from a spaghetti Western!   8)

I was thinking the same thing.  Wolf Point's signature hazard.

For the french canadian here:

la Gahouiche... je l'ai hooké dans la gahouiche...

the word gahouiche represents any broken ground, wooded and bushy areas where you either going to lose your ball or would need a miraculous shot to get the ball back in play

Himalayas at St Enodoc?

ell's Half Acre???

Principal's Nose at TOC, if not the most famous hazard it is certainly one of the most influential.

How bout the Cardinal Bunker at Prestwick?

One of my favourites is Rae's Creek.  Its slides off the tongue of southerners.

Finally, there is Bill's Bathtub at Pennard.

Ciao

New plays planned for 2024:Winterfield, Alnmouth, Camden, Palmetto Bluff Crossroads Course, Colleton River Dye Course  & Old Barnwell

"Bathtub"....2.5-ft deep, bathtub-shaped depression in the 3rd green at Essex County in MA.  Circa 1890.

"Taft Bunker," 30 yards short of 10th green at Myopia.  The 1910 version did not have stairs to get out, and President Taft was not mobile enough to extricate his 300+ pounds from the 5-foot deep pit.  Ropes and idle caddies were summoned, and the bunker gained a name!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

 The _xx!$XY*&%^#$_ 13th, Par 5 Green (vintage 1978)

but my favorite is for the 17th .. The Devil's Bathtub .. (looking for pic for you)... i guess lot's of Devil names abound eh?

Wentworth West - The Burma Road
TOC - Mrs Grainger's Bosoms
RSG - The Maiden
Deal - Vardon's Parlour
S&A - The Gumbleys

There's a bunker at Prince's I'm thinking of renaming to Jamie's Pit of Sorrow
