GCA "New Rules"
« on: July 17, 2010, 08:27:12 AM »
Whatever your politics, I generally enjoy HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" show because it is always politically incorrect and calls them as he sees them, often with a sort of brutal honesty.

One segment he has at the end of each show is called "New Rules", where Maher essentially proposes how things "should be" if he were king of the universe, which serves to poke insightful and humorous criticisms of politics and people in the news.   His barbs hit their target with pretty consistent accuracy, and it's hard to take umbrage with many of his jabs.

In that regard, I'm thinking it's time we come up with some "New Rules" for GCA, and all opinions are welcome, particularly if they are funny and poignant.

I'll start with a few to get the ball rolling.....

New Rule - If you post more than three times consecutively to the same thread without response from another participant (and aren't posting pics), you're a "fluffer" and a self-possessed bore, and no one wants to listen to your drivel.

New Rule - If you dig back beyond the front page to resurrect a dying thread more than two days in a row, you're playing with yourself and engaging in "thread-jerk", which most of the rest of us don't want to watch for obvious reasons.

New Rule - If you look back and over 90% of your posts are spent in argumentative, sustained disagreement with others, you may want to consider that everyone thinks you're a very unhappy, disagreeable person who probably needs some qualified professional help.   After all, deep down you have to know there's very little chance that you're right and everyone else is wrong, don't you?

New Rule - Golf courses are not museum pieces to be "studied" using remote control.   Part of the real value of this site is that people are speaking and posting from experience, and describing their opinions from actual experience of "being there".   GOLF IS AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE THAT REQUIRES PARTICIPATION OF THE SENSES.   Unless you are physically unable to leave your house, or unless you're watching a course on HD television, you need to realize that your opinion about any course you haven't actually seen isn't worth squat to anyone and you should spend less time typing and more time playing.

New Rule - (and I'm guilty of this one) No posting after midnight, or after a second drink.   What seemingly eloquently rolls off a lubricated tongue at 3am often reads like malarkey in the harsh light of day.   While acid and pot may have added to the Beatles creativity, and the bottle may have inspired Hemingway's words, generally the rest of us make much LESS sense after a few than before.

New Rule - (and I'm probably guilty of this one, as well) Making a point for the 3rd, or 5th, or 5,000th time doesn't make it any more valid.   We get it, we understand your agenda, were really not that slow on the uptake, and there is nothing more boring than a one-trick pony who can't talk about anything else but their "cause".   There is a reason that Billy Joel wrote "Angry Young Man" to poke fun at that sort, and personal crusades are usually only interesting to those personally invested in the same dogmatic (and usually unrealistic)  belief.

Fire away...   ;D

My Aunt was Bill Maher's 5th grade teacher. Not so sure your rules, although sensible, will be followed!

PS:  I am passing thru PA/NJ in a few weeks, lets play a round!

 8) New Rule: If the course is private and especially ultra-private, it's rankings shall not be discussed or argued about.   It's gca merit is open to discussion only if pictures are available or can be referenced to another thread.

New Rule: If you spend any time at all on gca.com, you are $##@#^% crazy.

When I look back on my gca.com career (borne of a bad marriage as someone reminded recently) I realize not much I have posted really mattered here.  In fact, here is my comprehensive list of my ideas that made a difference here:

You asked for funny and you definitely got it.

Way to go Joseph and Mr. Jeffrey, Sir, even though I might have a minor gnit to pick with your 19th point or rule Mr. Jeffrey.

I like all of your rules except part of the third one on your list.  Actually, I often find that I am right and everyone else is wrong, especially Bill Maher.

1...good...what are people trying to fluff, their post counts?  Holy Hay-Seuss, that would be pathetic.
2...sucks...that's akin to saying "don't dig back decades to look at older golf courses..."
3...good...I see it more as, if you can't keep your cool on the web, you probably can't keep your cool in the real world.  No matter how old, strive to better yourself by debating, not arguing.
4...sucks, because people who study paintings don't go out, attempt to paint the painting, then report back on it.  Same goes for music, professional sports and other pursuits.  We can be aficionados without partaking, although experience makes you more credible in the court of public opinion.
5...good...booze and weed simply make posts too funny, and who needs mirth on this site?
6...good, although quoting Billy Joel as a philosophical source is only slightly less hysterical than Will Ferrell as Dubya quoting Lyrnyrd Skynard.

2.  You can bring it back once, perhaps twice, but any more than that you're just pullin' on it.  ;)

Ronald,

4 how can you study a painting if you don't actually go out and see the painting?

Not sure I understand your objection to that one?

No weed in the house, but with two beers in me and the cable out in Connecticut, the next post by me  could be verrrrrry funny.  ;)

0 for 2086, maybe 2087 will be the one?
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Shivas,

Most extremists are pompous windbags, on both sides as evidenced by rush, hannity, and olberman.

Sometimes thaey are also quite funny and hit their mark.

$that was the point of this thread, and I actually thought it was sort of inspired by your gca myth series.

I wasn't looking for boring political commentary...I'm sure you can come up with some good rules if you try.  ;)
