Is there something preventing the contestants from keeping the ball low?

Is there some forced carry that is now insurmountable?

Lord, this is wimpy, and dare I say it...contrary to the spirit and intent of the game..

In my opinion, play should only ever be suspended for wind if the ball is moving from the stationary position on the greens...

Did it look like that?

I believe there was an issue with marking golf balls on the holes close to the Eden estuary where the wind was really howling.  And yes, balls were moving on the green from a stationary position.

Balls were in severe danger of moving / moving on the 11th green.

No option but to suspend play.

Do you have a choice when balls are moving on the greens? I ask this question honestly for the rules gurus out there.

Reports were it was happening all over.

I cannot believe some of you guys are whingeing about this.  40 mph winds and balls not staying still on at least 4 greens. It is the holes at the end near the Eden estuary that are causing the problem.

Bummer but that's what was happening.  The players were afraid to address the ball because it was moving when placed on the green.  Gusts over 40 mph by the Eden estuary.

Don't they have the option not to ground their putter?

This is a dangerous precedent for the King's Putter in Bandon next March.  I hope we plan to suspend play if the wind exceeds 20 mph!   ;)

Graeme McDowell is blaming the course setup. He said the greens are running faster than they did yesterday which is a mistake the R&A made since they knew the wind was coming.

The issue is once again green speeds and pin positions.

Add to that,

Road hole bunker re-built 10-14 days ago. Is that true? That's pampering the pros at best, and in the least, vanity.

One would assume after 150 years of experience, The R & A would've made better pre-production decisions?

Nice pic, Michael. Jay's the one tumbling next to Mike in the yellow shirt.

Can anyone speak knowledgeably about McDowell's comments?

There is some inordinately stupid stuff being posted in this and Jay's identical thread.

I can only hope it's a whole lot of subtle humour that I am misunderstanding as serious posts...

I guess if a ball would not remain stationary on the green, it is understandable, however very regrettable having played the course when it was raining sideways.

Perhaps the greens are a bit too keen?

I know a player who was suspended because of wind. In his case it was inadvisable to stand downwind of him after a heavy lunch.

Melvyn,

Does "real" links golf include playing a stroke with a moving ball?  I don't think so.

I don't understand your point or anyone elses that has a problem with this.  What other option did they have? If you're going to tell me they shouldn't have the greens running at the speed they do, that's still not an answer, because at the point play was suspended, the conditions were the conditions and they had to deal with it.
