Just for context, this is a very public course (green fees <$50) on a flat, windy site. All of the bunkers are maintained this way. What say you?

Looks fine to me. Facing like that eliminates flashed sand, which is labor intensive, or having to fly-mow all those areas that are too steep for a riding mower. I am a fan of anything that reduces maintenance costs and allows more people to get on the golf course cheaper.

Wow, that is some driving range net there.

Some of the rough looks pretty thick.  Does it slow down play?

It looks great, but....

My only concern would be cheering the ball into the bunker because the bunker would be preferable to the possibility of losing the ball in the knee high stuff surrounding the bunker.

That said it looks fantastic and looks like a lot of fun to play.

Matt -

The Metropolitan GL by the Oakland (CA) Airport. A fun course to play, especially when there is a nice breeze blowing, as is often the case. Rarely do more than 2 holes in a row play in the same direction.

Some of the bunker edges are even more overgrown than the ones pictured. On one or two occasions, players in my group have come very close to losing a ball in those areas. I think that some of them need to be trimmed a little more often.

Looks great, and returns some degree of unpredictability to the hazards.

When I have seen that style in the Philadelphia area the very long grass is usually only on the forward or green side of the hazard.  I like the look and they are hazards, so as long as they don't slow down play I like them.

Personally, I think the front side of bunkers are better not be maintained like this as the idea is of a hazard which gathers the ball... With this maintenance mold, unless you hit directly in to the bunker on the fly, it won't likely reach the sand...

I've no problem with the style around the sides and on the face ala the heathland courses and Royal County Down...

Out of curiousity, is this course in Colorado?

Mike,

As David Tepper said above, this is Metropolitan Golf Links right next to the Oakland airport.  I get to run an NCGA Junior Tour tournament there in ten days.  The kids should have fun with this.

Looks good to me. I've played there numerous times on my in and out of the Bay area.

It's a good course, fun to play and inexpensive. You can meet some interesting characters there too!

Very true.  Last year there was a biker wedding there during our tournament.  Some interesting tatoos on the bride and her bridesmaids. :o
