Matthew, do you realize how far you could have run with that?  Tell your playing companion it was the same George that was Trump's assistant on The Apprentice.   ;D

You know, we can't be too critical of people who don't know all the ins and outs of golf course architecture and its history...everyone has their unique interests and strange areas of in-depth knowledge.  You know weird things like, who was the 8th President of the United States, who is 4th all time in career RBI's in baseball history, who finished runner up in the World Cup 8 years ago, who won the gold medal for the decathalon in 1954?

But nevertheless, it is totally amazing to have a community of other like minded people who do have an interest in these things.  A few weekends ago, I popped up to Tennessee to meet some guys from the site at a restaurant and a non-golfer friend of mine came along for dinner.  When we got to the restaurant, the GCA'ers were already there and were drawing holes, green complexes, and angles of play on a napkin and having an "interesting" conversation about it.  My friend looked at me with a funny look as if to say, "I guess there are other people in this world who share your weird quirks and obsession about golf".  It was a classic moment.

The types of comments on this thread make my convictions stronger that golf is a niche sport and even those who play it frequently don't really know what makes a great/fun golf course.  They are highly influenced by advertising and marketing most notably through watching the PGA Tour on tv.  If it is a Tour course, it has to be good is a prevailing thought among many golfers.  Perhaps we can chip away and educate a few people here and there regarding our interests because we have been educated on the time-tested ideals of what makes a great golf course.

Anyway, 2 cents.

Later!

Q - What makes a course a 'Championship" course?

A - You play a Championship on it

Q - Could this this course hold a Championship?

A - I don't know, is there parking for 20,000?

-Martin Van Buren

-Barry Bonds*

-Germany

-Trick question. There were no Olympic Games in 1954 (only 1952 and 1956)

By the way, the quizzical looks regarding Bandon are more common than you think. A lot of Midwesterners that I have met identify their dream trips as Koehler or Pebble.  Many don't have a clue about Bandon. On the other hand, most people I run into west of the Mississippi have heard of and drool over  Bandon.

Waterfalls are children of Satan

This is one of the funniest things I've read on here.  I couldn't agree more.

There are two guys who I consider to be good golfers and well-traveled at that.  After looking at Tim Gavrich's pics of Yale Golf Club the other day, I forwarded on to my friends the pictures of the biarritz green there.  To my utter amazement, the responses I got back from these two guys were 100% negative:

"Where's the windmill?"
"WTF is that ugly thing?"
"Why on earth would you ever build something like that?"
"That has to be the most hideous thing I've ever seen."

When I told them that the biarritz was a classic design feature and offered up the suggestion that maybe this was a pretty neat hazard that was used in lieu of crowding the place with bunkering, etc, or that it's a good way to change up the playing options of the hole from day-to-day, the responses didn't improve.

I was floored.

CJ,

That is NOTHING! I was Grounds Chair when restored our Biarritz to its original design and fellow members (including two really close buddies..) said all of the above to me...

Too bad! :)

Went to marraige counceling. On the first appointment my wife starts out by venting for 5 minutes. She shifts from one topic to an other and back and forth.Ocassionally she mentions the internet. With her foriegn accent and shifting of topics I'm not sure the guy is understanding her.So the councelor stops her, looks at me and says "So you have a problem with pornography".Confused I replied "No" and looked at my wife because I never heard the word pornography. So this guy says "Why would she lie..she said you're on the internet too much".My wife replied "Golf Club Atlas".Talk about a blank stare.

It made mine, too, although I have heard some refer to this site as "golf porn."

Your post reminds me of how I probably spent too much time here when my marriage went south.  It was a nice little escape from the ex, who rarely talked to me.  And, at the time, my three kids were teenagers, so of course, I was dumber than dirt to them, too.

Kelly,

Et tu, Brute? I can take it from my architectually-challenged friends, but you too?

Seriously, this hole is all about the play and it is a REALLY hard par if you are playing the proper set of tees. I guess I have to agree that Biarritz holes do look weird. It may get cooler looking with continued removal of trees behind the green.

Bill,

I've looked at your photo for a minute now and it's very odd and symmetrical, but for some reason I love it.  Maybe it's because there isn't a flag and my eyes are completely drawn to the center of the green which shows the mirroring halves of the hole.  But once again, very odd.

I want to play this hole right now!

He's PGA. Pelican Hills must have given the most predictable result, therefore it must be the best. Invite him to play around with you at your local Pelican Hills (aka driving range). Maybe he will get the point.
