Bob thanks for give the correct and polite answer. There was a night many many years ago when on the way back to Atlanta after watching my Tigers dust South Carolina in football, I took a less celebrated approach to seeing the course. It was after midnight and many drinks had been consumed. I became convinced life could not go forward unless I stood on those hallowed ground. We stopped and I climbed over the fense. After 5 minutes of walking around in the dark and seeing the course in the moonlight the life was back in drunken balance and the escape was made. Needless to say it is good we do not play South Carolina every year or I would surely be caught eventually on those moonlit celebatory drives home.

Augusta natives will tell you similar stories. Some made it back over the fence, others didn't. You were fortunate.

We stopped by the gates while passing through one day. I believe I was 12-13 at the time. Obviously they didnt let us in, but they did phone up to the shop and brought us a few towels and pin flags that we purchased. I thought that was pretty nice of them.

Good luck in the quest Gareth - I think the responses highlight the difference in access over the pond. I wish you luck in your quest -somewhere I would love to see one day

Thanks Paul.

As you know we both have a mutual friend at Bearwood Lakes who has played ANGC twice now  :)

Who dat? (A PM reply will be fine)

I think Gareth realises that ANGC is unlikely to wave him to the first tee and have a caddy waiting with Tiger Woods spare set of clubs, but as an entrepreneur he is used to sticking his neck out and sometimes getting lucky. I am sure he can compose a letter with the right mix of charm and respect to at least get a reply.

That's true-not all made it back over the fence.

Dave,
the first year we were open we'd get a lot of nostalgic race fans(and still do) racing full speed down the track.
The problem was the track ended.......it's tough to stop a car going 100 mph before it hits a sand pit :o :o ::) ???
we called a lot of tow trucks that first year

If you're in Hilton Head, I would definitely play Harbour Town as it is one of the most fun courses I've ever played.  It isn't long, but it is very tight and it takes a while to get used to the course.  You need to be on the correct side of the fairway or you might not even have a shot at the tiny greens.  IMO every hole starting with 13 to the end could be a signature hole.  It has beautiful par 3's and the 18th hole is very tough/fun.

I wasn't that impressed with Long Cove.  It was a nice club and everyone treated us well, but if I had my choice I'd play Harbour Town, which I think is a much better course.

I haven't been able to get on at Colleton River, just off the island at Hilton Head, but it looks great.  Haven't made it to May River either, but it is on my list to play sooner rather than later.

If you care to head South from Augusta, you could hit Jacksonville and try to play Sawgrass.  I think Sea Island isn't too far either...maybe an hour south of Savannah.

Finally, even if you don't get a chance to play at Kiawah when you're near Charleston, go have lunch out there and check it out.  Beautiful.  The course will beat you up pretty good...it did to me anyway.

Have a great trip!

Depending on the dates you are coming through, I would be happy to have you out to a nice club in Savannah, or Secession Club in Beaufort, SC, though they are closed September 7-23.

Just shoot me an IM with your dates and we'll see what we can do...
