A club that will keep you up at night?
« on: June 25, 2010, 05:56:32 AM »
I have the extreme good fortune to play Shinnecock this morning, and then board a plane this evening to go to Sand Hills to start playing tomorrow. This means that I am playing my two favorite golf courses within a 24 hour period of one another. Although I have played them both before, I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night due to my excitement. What courses have you guys played that generate anticipation like that even on return visits?

Keith:

I believe many of the courses we speak of here generate a level of excitement which deprive many of us of shut eye the night before playing them.

The Sand Hills / Shinnecock Hills combo would be impossible to surpass in terms of anticipation but there are many combinations of back to back courses which create that same level of excitement.

I know I didn't sleep much the night before NGLA/Shinnecock.... didn't sleep much after playing both either, but that's because I was out all night with some hammerheads.

Hell,

I'm excited to be playing a Ted Robinson Course on Sun.; not all of us can be as lucky as Keith.  ::)

Pete, I'm in the same boat, albeit a Ted remodel.....but still excited to play.

I would gladly pull an all nighter to hang with Keith.....now Huckaby, I'd require a few hours of sleep to get a break from his incessant talking & whining :'(
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Oh don't get me wrong; I play so infrequently, I lie awake the night before ANY round that I am graced as allowed to play... I was excited as all hell to play Valley Gardens GC (9 hole, par 29) yesterday....

But also file that under the whining that Spaulding mentions.

The day and night I mentioned just sprung particularly to mind after I read the first response here.

The only rounds of golf I have trouble sleeping before hand are tournaments. That doesn't mean I don't have a high sense of anticipation for playing certain courses. The worst is knowing you are going to play a course months in advance of getting to play it. I then spend every day thinking out about it. That has happened with Pine Valley, Riviera and the three trips to Scotland one to Ireland.

This question seems like an addendum to the 'which courses have given you a panic attack on the first tee'

National. I woke up so early and could not get back to sleep, so I figured what the hell, I'll be SURE to beat the GW Bridge traffic...and arrived 2 1/2 hours early for my tee time :)

Any course I'm about to play in competition.  Also, the night before any trip to the Greenbrier or the Homestead is a restless one.

Any course when playing with Anthony Gray... the anticipation is nearly too much.

the first time i played CPC, i was so petrified of oversleeping and missing my tee time, i had my wife call me from Chicago before she left for work...which meant i was up at 4:30 am for my 8:00 tee time....and of course i felt no fatigue at all that day!
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

But that's because he keeps calling you in the middle of the night trying to make sure you are going to show.
