Mucci and Mountain Ridge! (pics)
« on: June 21, 2010, 12:56:35 PM »
I had the pleasure of playing Mountain Ridge last Friday. My host was Jay Blumenfeld, one of the most accomplished amateur golfers in New Jersey. Filling out our foursome were two other excellent players: Andy Abramson and GCA legend Pat Mucci!

I arrived 45 minutes early and Jay, Andy and I warmed up waited patiently for Pat. He arrived a few minutes late, but not too late to go through his normal pre-game warmup...A view of MR's first hole from the tee, which I rate as the best looking opening hole that I have ever played:

A view from the fairway back at the tee as my host could wait no longer for Pat to finish warming up :) This was helpful as it gave me time to search for my provisonal that was buried in juicy rough (I found my first ball.)

Our hero finally tees off and catches up to us on the green. His drive ends up in the right rough, but he almost jars the iron shot! Pat announces that the reason for his tardiness is that he had to pick it up a new putter on the way to the course. He proceeds to drain a tough 6 foot downhill, twisting birdie on #1.

Then he follows that with a 60 foot birdie on 2 and par saving putts on 3 and 4. This putter is off to a ridiculous start! He also birdies the par 3 7th and one putts #9 for par...I count 12 putts for 9 holes...

Now if you read Pat's description of his match with Ran, you know that he has a REALLY slow backswing. This comes in handy when you are taking pictures...

Mountain Ridge is an absolute gem of a course, classic Donald Ross bunkering and it is in immaculate shape:

The fairway bunker on Hole #3 is a bit of a mystery, and seems a little bit "non-Ross-like" Still a great little hole!

Pat can really play, and if you are wondering what he really looks like without his hat pulled down over his eyes, I suggest you attend his GCA get together at MR in September!

Are those beryllium copper Pings that Pat is using?  If so, I love it!!  When I was a kid those sticks were highly sought after by many.

Bill,

I think I've solved the mystery behind my lousy irons.

I'm hunched over the ball too much and I'm bending my left elbow far, far too much.

I'm going to work on both ASAP.

I'm glad you enjoyed your day at Mountain Ridge.
Everybody had a great time.

Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks for the pix. It's nice to see Pat in action. Despite his commentary, those photos look like defining photos for illustrating the downswing.

One question: Did his caddie grab your camera and chuck it into the water or woods with all those photos during his swing? :)

George,

I was very nervous, but he smoked every shot where i took a photo , except the side view of the iron on hole 18, which he slapped short and left. He KILLS his driver.

He KILLS his driver.

That's what my best friend, a very long golfer himself, reported.

Hope I can make Pat's day this fall. And I hope everyone else can, too.

You'll note that I waited until hole 18 to take a picture of Jay :)

What a swing HE has! Video would better...

Mike Hendren,

Those trusty old legs used to propel me to great heights, allowing me to dunk a basketball before I added all that bulk.

Jonathan,

Those are Beryllium Pings, vintage 1986.
Unfortunately, I've worn out the grooves on six sets of L, S and W wedges.

Bill Brightly,

I played Oakmont, was more upright, didn't bend my elbow as much and hit my irons better.
Not great, but much better.
I"m going to continue to work on my posture and left arm.

Thanks

Course looks great, but in none of those pictures can we see the eyes of "Mucci".  This cannot be coincidental.

Consistent with my opinion of Keyser Soze, I'm still not convinced that he's a real person.
