Mark, you are selling yourself short.  Most put more than 5, you stopped at 4!   ;D

They're about the only four he hasn't played yet!

I am pretty sure it is right around April 1st every year.  You must have missed it this year.  Oh well, there is always next year.

Tony - good spot

Scott - nearly but not quite, your mistaking me for a certain G Jones!

I cannot count so I should make up my 5 and I'll go for 6 and pick New South Wales and The Dunes Club as both are realistic unlike my other list that contains one which is slightly trickier.

Royal Melbourne
Kingston Heath
Cape Kidnappers
Barnbougle Dunes
*One other as needed -- I'd let the locals help me out with that one.

Mac, that is a very good point David made about coming back 4 times but if you include Ireland and also include "life", you never know when you are making it back so make sure you do what you can do and I appreciate the leg issues on your part.

Another comment regarding not over doing it, one thing I noticed on my 4- 2 weeks trips to Scotland/Ireland, I never once woke up without the excitement of I was going to play another round of links golf. I dont think I would get that in NA over a 2 week period. Everyday was a new adventure and i was just itching to get going. And I like to drink with the locals in the pubs and woke up some mornings feeling pretty hollow but the call of the first tee was greater than the pounding head.

As for relaxing on your drive to Askernish, try and relax and let me know how that goes. The A series roads are great and overall I found Scotland has wider roads than Ireland, but the remote parts require attention with the stone wall lined roads. One thing you will notice is the standard wave from oncoming motorists, they all have their hands at 10 and 2 and just lift their left index finger to wave, even the locals are afraid the take their hands off the wheel.

Enjoy the trip Pal.

I just played Muirfield in May. It should not have been on my list. I do like the idea of Newport though.

Jeff,

The Muirfield one is more sentimentality than architectural interest.

A picture of the 18th in Jack Nicklaus book my dad got me in the early 70s spurred my interest and love of links golf.

Plus, a friend and I walked onto the property in the mid 80s,to make it as far as halfway down the 18th hole...took a few pics, and then were booted!  ;)  ;D

Keeping it local.

1. Cypress Point - obviously.
2. The Institute - I just think it would be cool to say that I've played it.
3. Meadow Club - might get to in July, but again that combo of very cool and very under-the-radar.
4. Pasatiempo - obvious as well I guess.
5. Pebble Beach.

Matt if you ever get that invite to The Institute and have a spot open, call me, I will drive from Sacto!
The legend of the Institute is a great one, I have yet to find anyone who has played it or even knows someone who has played it, except for Fred Funk.
I am surprised you haven't played Pasa yet, the NCGA has had some $135 deals there and has a members tourny there each year.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

ANGC  - The history and knowledge of the course from afar puts it on this list
Shinnecock - Went to the US Open in 2004 just after playing  the greatest course in the world (Pine Valley) and thought Shinnecock might be better
NGLA- Those who I trust say it is the most fun golf course they have ever played
SAND HILLS! - Greatest modern, and so I can get Huckaby and Spaulding to shut up about it
Crystal Downs - Maxwell's best set of greens, and as a member at Prairie Dunes, I have to see it to believe they are better than PD.

Tim - I know a few local pros who have played THE INSTITUTE - so there, now you know someone who knows someone who has played it.

Sean - do you really believe that if you played Sand Hills it would do anything but make Spaulding and I go on MORE about it?  We'd be able to talk specifics with you, man....

As for me...

1. El Niguel CC
the rest of the world doesn't matter.

Thanks Tom, I figured that you would probably be the first of this bunch to find a way on and it sounds like you are just a couple of steps away. But have you played Yocha De He yet?

No Tim, I'm no closer than anyone else to playing THE INSTITUTE, I just know some who have.

My live revolves around El Niguel.  Yoche de Hee is just another of the world's courses that comes after that.

Pine Valley- I heard the soup is great

NGLA- I heard they have a great lobster lunch

Seminole - I heard you might be able to see boobs from one of the holes

Cypress - You can see Pebble

Funny, myself, Mark Pearce, James Boon and Robin Hiseman discussed this at length today and none of us would have it. There are just more alluring courses out there when it comes to choosing just five from the whole wide world.

Maybe the pull is stronger in America, I don't know.

It's hard to limit yourself to 5.  There is so much to see and experience out there.
