"The Cliffs of Doom"
« on: June 19, 2010, 08:26:52 PM »
Have they always called these holes at Pebble the clffs of doom or is this new?  If this is not a new name, are they over-using it this year?  I mus say I have never heard it and I'm not a fan. It just sounds silly to me.

Dude man...the Cliffs of Doom is an awesome moniker!!  Who can't see the genius in that?

BTW...how about Tiger's cut 3 wood on 18?!?!? :o

I am just praying fervently that Chris Berman's nickname "Cannery Row" doesn't take root...

It is essential to the success of the tournament that the hardest three hole stretch has a catchy name that rolls off the tongue with GUSTO.

I remember something about Abalone Corner. Was it Jenkins?

Dan Jenkins named it Abelone Corner way back, but what does he know?

Yeah, it was Jenkins.

It was an article called "The Best Things in Golf". The category was "Best three holes in a row", which was Amen Corner. Then the very next one was "Best three holes in a row that aren't at Augusta", which was 8-9-10 at Pebble, or "Abalone Corner".

Then there was a third one, which was "Best three holes in a row that aren't at Augusta or Pebble Beach"... I think that one might have been 16-17-18 at Merion.

Isn't that name redundant?

Cliffs of Doom.

Duh!   ::)

Did I mention that I'm not sure yet which announcer this week I find more annoying?  Chris Berman is the leader in the clubhouse, and the bald-headed, bespactled guy who argued that they needed to flatten the 14th green only pales in airtime comparison.

Mike, here in the Caribbean we are getting the tourney in Spanish!   And the World Cup is in Chinese or Farsi !

John Garrity from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED called me early this week and asked me if it was true that I came up with the "Cliffs of Doom" moniker.  It was the title of the U.S. Open preview piece I wrote for GOLF Magazine in 1992, and someone in the pro shop at Pebble told him that I had written the term and then one of the broadcasters that year started using it at every opportunity.

I told John that as I best I could remember, the name wasn't in my actual story, but the headline writer [maybe George Peper, who was still the editor] came up with it for the title.

I think it's a pretty cheesy sounding name for such a great stretch of golf holes.

I think just the name PEBBLE BEACH says it all. Do we need to give monikers or nicnames?
