The hardest second shot in golf ?
« on: June 19, 2010, 03:31:27 AM »
I heard the commentators espouse the approach to # 8 at Pebble Beach as the "hardest second shot in golf" ?

Do you agree with that notion ? or not ? Why ?

What other "harder" one's are out there ?

Some would say I am stating the obvious by saying the 17th at TOC....thats why it is the hardest second shot.
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

I agree with Simon and others, the second on 17 at the Old is tougher.

If you are calling Chris Berman a "dope", you are being way too kind. As long as he is announcing golf, there should never be any criticism of Curtis Strnage, Bobby Clampett, Johnny Miller, Lanny Wadkins, or anyone else I can think of. I tried to put my set on mute every time he spoke.

That's a Nicklaus quote. I have no reason to doubt it, especially in an Open.

They missed it a by a hole -- try the 9th from tip tees and from hanging sidehill lie -- players have to hit driver on the 9th -- not the case with the 8th. The length of the 2ndat the 9th is daunting -- the slightest push or pull and it's quick bogey -- even DB or more.

Aslk McDowell -- he's bogied it both times thus far. ;)

p.s. if you want another one that's daunting -- try the 2nd at Shinnecock's 10th hole. That one reallly grabs them by the testicles.

Grab's them by the testicles?   Well then it must be good!

Surely a few at Oakmont must enter the equation here?

1, 3 and 10 for starters?

5 at Merion?

Tom:

One can also mention the 2nd shot at WF/W closing hole. Just look at the train wrecks that happened there in the '06 US Open !

I thought that an odd comment as well. Intimidatin or an amateur because of the setting?  Yes. Tough due to the elevation change and small green and wind? Yes.  But two of the three times I've played the holes it was less than a 7 iron in and the time it was more was because I bailed left off the tee.

I just don't see it. I also don't get all the hoopla about the difficulty off #7 except in extreme wind.

Tim,
I completely agree about 7. It is a gorgeous location, but the shot itself isnt that difficult. I hit punch wedge and i had about a 1 1/2 club wind into me. Nothing terribly special.

I'm pretty sure Nicklaus said it was his "favorite second shot in golf". The announcer got it incorrect.

Boomer has gone to that place where what the brain used to tell him to say is not what comes out now. He will never get down to Brent bad though. I have always though the 2nd shots at 8 and 9 for me are as tough as they get.

Second to 13th St Andrews Beach.

Isn't the 1st shot harder on that hole ?  ;)

Kevin, Mark,

The tee shot at 13 St Andrews Beach is harder than the second. The second shot is only difficult because it is long - but it is not particularly scary. There is no awaiting disaster for a miss. In fact everything is helping the ball in.
The second into the 7th at The Australian when it is into the wind is much more difficult.

Kevin,

No, I don't believe it is.

Yes, there is a lot of - too much, really  - rubbish left for the missed drive, but it takes a pretty rank shot to find it, unless you don't know where to aim. ;)

The second is going to be long, unless still or downwind, which is about 5% of the time, played off an undulating lie, from where it is easy to put in the bunkers right.  If you have bailed right from the tee, you have to hit it over the bunkered hill, most probably from a downhill lie.
There is no awaiting disaster for a miss.

Twenty yards right of the green - pretty easy to do for most players with a wood or hybrid second, and the prevailing wind into and from the left.

That nice little ridge back right makes for tricky recovery shots to rear pins, and there's the false front, too.

Mark: I'd imagine the list of holes where there is serious trouble if you miss the green 20 yards right is a long one...

Scott,

No doubt, Scott. However, Mike is asserting that the drive is more dangerous because of the trouble left, which can be avoided from the tee.

There is no avoiding the second shot into the green.

The hardest second shot in golf is always the one that follows a shank.
