... the most grievous error The Confidential Guide?

By that, I am of course referring to the '3' that he bestowed to Lundin Links based on a 1982 visit. As he told us at the Bandon GolfClubAtlas.com dinner a few weeks ago, he returned to Lundin Links in 2008 with George Bahto for research on the Leven hole. In addition, the contours of the seventeenth fairway there helped him crystallize his notion for a Hog's Back fairway. And those two holes might not be among the best 1/3 of the holes on the course!

Does Tom care to right this most grievous grading error here and now? A '3' is at least 3 and maybe 4 levels off from an accurate representation of this fine course and justice needs to be served!

Cheers,

I'm not a big fan of the elevated holes.

I'd love to play the original 18 some day.

not the best holes but were the features CBM saw and what we used as a basis for the Leven at Old Macdonald

when are you posting your Old Macdonald review  (I have a lot of trouble calling it Old Mac, you'll have to pardon me with that - like I have troulbe with people saying: "have a good one"     a good what ?????)

........................  it's been weeks, man - let's go!!
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

George, what are the similarities and differences between the Leven holes at NGLA and Old Mac(donald)?

Ran:

Really, there are probably more grievous errors than that one in The Confidential Guide.  Two or three people threatened to sue me over something I'd written there; surely those comments would have had a more grievous effect if I'd had to go to court over my opinions!

But, you are right, Lundin Links deserved more than a 3.  How much more, I can't really say ... sadly, I've only walked the first three and last three holes since I saw it in 1982.  The rating was partly punitive for them having broken up the original course and added nine holes that nobody would ever look forward to.  And, while it was very cool to figure out the 17th hole's role in the history of golf architecture, it is less relevant to a traveling golfer considering that even you could hit your hickory-shafted driver past most of the interesting part of that hole today.  :D

Having looked carefully at the first six holes, though, I cannot agree with your implication that I should have given the course a 7 on the Doak scale.  Somewhere in between our two ridiculous opinions is probably about right.

"Have a good one" here in Australia means have a good day... Can also be shortened to "have a goodun". I seem to remember you having trouble with my accent George!  :P

I am also looking forward to the review, as I am sure there are things on the course that I would have totally missed that Ran would have spotted with those keen eyes of his.

Hurry Ran!  ;D
