The Amateur at Muirfield and North Berwick
« on: June 14, 2010, 10:08:35 PM »
The current rendition (One hundred twenty-fifth anniversary) of the British Amateur today started 36 hole of medal play qualifying at Muirfield and North Berwick (West). Blustery conditions, the vast majority of the leaders playing the home of the original Redan, before heading to HCEG tomorrow. Only three of the top 26 scorers were at Muirfield.
Both courses play to a par of 71. The last time the Amateur was contested at Muirfield somebody named Sergio Garcia won the cup. Any GCAers spectating?

Pete:

I'm surprised they used North Berwick as the other course for stroke play qualifying.

It seems like if it was windy one day and calm the next, playing North Berwick on the windy day and Muirfield on the calm day would be a large advantage.

That was one of the reasons the pros gave for not wanting to play the Stadium Course at PGA West as part of the Bob Hope Classic ... that if they drew PGA West on a windy day, they would be at a severe disadvantage compared to all the other courses in the rota at that time.

Tom,
Probably no other really good courses in the area that could stand up to top amateurs ;)

There was hardly any wind yesterday so I feared the worst but the lowest score at NB was 67.  There is NO WIND at all this morning so lets hope it doesnt get masacred today.

To be fair a course record of 63 (Trevor Immelman) is not too low for a course measuring under 6500.  Its in great shape and the weather is fantastic.  On the whole this year NB has been in better shape than Muirfield but I got a cheeky round there last week and it is now fabulous as always.  They wont be using the new back tee on 9 apparently.

Pete- I cant come along today but will do the rest of the week at Muirfield.  Anyone else in the area feel free to PM and lets meet up for a pint if we can.
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

Walker Cupper Jamie Fleetwood is medalist. France's Olivier Rozner tied North Berwick's course record of 63 with an inbound 29. An 18 for 9 playoff.

Simon, I am not in Scotland attending.

Why haven't the R&A updated their web page since Monday?

The match-play stage started today. Anyone know how the Irish qualifiers are doing?

It was up to date this morning, with the result of the first two play-off matches.  Are you sure you weren't looking at a cached page?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Thanks for reminding me Mark. A refresh of the page worked. Very odd indeed as I hadn't viewed this web before, so I don't understand how it was cached.  ???

Further evidence that the game is going global:  34 of the players in the round of 64 were not from GB&I. In addition to players from France, Sweden & Germany, there were players from Finland, Denmark, South Korea, China & Bolivia.

Its been like that for quite a number of years. A look through the record books will illustrate the number of continental winners there has been in the recent past.

Plus some US players.  One of them had 74 with a triple on "Perfection."   :o

Niall -

I was aware that a number of non-GBI golfers have won the British Amateur in recent years, but I was surprised to see it has been 6 in the past 10 years.

Still, I am not sure over half the field in the round of 64 has ever been from outside GB&I.

Does anyone know what the handicap cut-off for entry was this year?

Rich,

No idea, but the highest HCAP of the Irish guys that played in the qualifying round was plus 0.4.

Dónal.
