The ideals of the every day golfer
« on: June 18, 2010, 07:46:20 AM »
In the USA, most golfers have a base appreciation of architecture. I admire that... The UK generally less so... Ireland far less again...

A week or so ago, I had a look at this well-known Irish discussion group (like this one) that appears to have a very active golf section... Everything is discussed... Competitions, courses, equipment... all based around Irish golf...

I thought I'd post a few ideas to see how people sounded out... It was more depressing than I could ever have imagined... They have NO comprehension of many of the things we see as preferable... I am hoping that they do not represent an accurate cross-section but they appear to be club golfers who are genuinely interested and involved in the sport...

What hope have we got?... How can we change the general perception of people?... Will the future take the sport even further away from the one we love?

Ally,

I think you are seeing the difference in the two cultures. Here the course is much less important as is all the frills such as clubhouse, conditioning usw. The average golfer in GB&I is more interested in playing golf to get away from the stress of every life and the people in his/her group. I do think you do us a disservice to golf in the GB&I as there are many average courses here containing many of the atributes that are so praised on this site plus good measure of things that are not but would be raved about. Maybe it is a case of taking it for granted.

Also, who is we? and what do you feel in the goodness of golf needs to happen in Ireland?

I don't think this is true at all--as a whole I would guess that USA golfers are no more interested in architecture than any other group.

I agree with Andy.  One can read through any number of internet golf forums and there is rarely if ever any GCA discussion.  When there are golf course topics, the elements that seem to be highly regarded are conditioning, amenities and scenic beauty.

At least, this is from my experience.
