Aerial of the Day #50 - 19 Mar 2002

Have we really done 50 of these already?

Due to a mental lapse, today's aerial was meant to be for Friday's tougher one, so keep that in mind.

The shape of the property (kind of Nebraska-like - a rectangle with a notch in the corner) is very similar to previous AOTD #27, Boca Rio's.

This course seems to like cluster bunkering.

It seems as if this WAS worthy of Friday #2.  This is the first time this state has been represented in AOTD.

I have no idea without some clues.  But, I'll risk the embarassment of putting down some storied and hallowed ground and say, I think this course looks boring from the air.  Unless there are some unobservable saving features like really undulating greens and fairways, this looks like a good parade grounds for the brown shirts to practice straight row goose-stepping.  ::)

Like the man said about 'doing their women and drinking their booze, but don't say anything bad about their course', once again I insert foot firmly in mouth and offend someone's feelings about their home course, I imagine.   :-[  

But this course does appear straighter and one dimensional than an aerial view of Elroy's Hirsch's flat-top. :-*

I wasn't "defending" the course or the GCAer, it was merely a clue.  There aren't any good double-entendre clues I can use for this one without giving it away.

I have a meeting from noon-3:30 EST, so I won't be around for awhile to give it away.  If anyone gets it by 1:00, feel free to spill.

Here's a big clue:  There is another course by the same name in the U.S. that is more well-known than this one.  Also, there are at least 3 people off the top of my head with a GCA connection in the area of this course.

Don't forget the dogleg (lack thereof) clue and notice the compact routing...

Is it in Indianapolis?  If so, I think I know it.  Were both courses with the same name designed by the same architect?

Nice call Chris.  Your clue iced it for me.  That and it seems that Scott only has the addresses of Ross courses to punch in the cooridinates on the maps ;)

Did you know it from the picture or figure it from clues.  How about 'refusing to dish the dirt with the rest of the ______s'?

I haven't played the course since high school from what I remember.  So I wasn't sure if that was it or not.  The clustering bunkers were what got me to think that was it, but the clue about the course with the same name made me pretty confidant.  It's a nice layout, but very overrun by trees from what I know of it today.  Would love to play it again sometime, especially since reading the Ross bio.

And Scott, what's up with all the Ross courses.  I know he did 400 or so, but geesh put down Klein's book for a day and look up something else why dontcha?  ;)

It seems a good example of a pondless course.  It appears that there is a creek or drainway in areas.  Does anyone know how much was added to this course in terms of bunker clusters, and how much may have been taken away in narrowed fairways, tree plantings etc.?  I'm guessing it was undergoing bunker rennovation when the picture was taken because there seems to be different sand in various bunkers.  I'm also guessing that there are the typical Ross use of ridges on the diagonal through fairways to promote a generous roll-out on the favored side.  That perhaps countering the lack of many doglegs.

I know, I know, enough with the Ross courses.  I get quite a few ideas for hidden gems from this site, and Ross courses seem to dominate that list.  I'll try to have no Ross course for the next two weeks.  :)

Back to here, yes that is Ross designed Broadmoor CC, in Indianapolis, home course of GCAer Ted Sturges.  Other GCA-affiliated people in the area (off top of my head) are Chris above and Ran's brother John.  I say affiliated, since he doesn't post, but has contributed many course reviews.  His wife posts occasionally (that makes 4).

The more famous (The) Broadmoor is the tony resort in the Colorado mountains which hosted the Women's Open a few years ago.
