East Coast King's Putter?
« on: April 10, 2003, 09:57:24 PM »
I had so much fun at Pasatiempo for the second annual King's Putter, I wondered if there was enough enthusiasm to have one on the east coast.

Cuscowilla seems like a suitable candidate to host the tournament.

Could we pull it off?  When would we have it?  Maybe we could even drag some of these left coasters to an SEC football game if we did it in the fall.

Carlyle

P.S.  Technically, I didn't play in the King's Putter.  Although I was first alternate, no one dropped out!  Instead, I played in a fivesome in the last group.  That still didn't prevent me from winning closest to the pin on #3 though!  Just a straightforward stinger 2-iron with a stealth-like fade!

Look at this monster:

Cuscowilla is definitely a course/event that I would try to attend. Like most things, it would depend on scheduling. My suggestion would be Spring on next year. If there is a repeat to this Spring (40 degrees and raining today  :'( ) up North next year, I guarantee that you will have a full house.

I'm up for an East coast event and wanted to see Cuscowilla, so that would be a good venue. What else is nearby that would be interesting and willing to put up with some diehards? I think there are 2-3 possible gatherings for this fall that I have heard rumors of, so hopefully someone will throw a date out so plans can be made.

You'll have to come up with your own name and prize though Carlyle. :)

I love the idea of a King's Putter on the east coast and you could not pick a better venue than Cuscawilla. I will say the real King would like to be in Atlanta to enjoy the other entertainment. I think the spring is better than the fall. There is no weekend to get SEC guys together that does not conflict out others. Yes, Carlyle you were the best player in our 5 some that day. Lets do it next spring. The real Kings Putter was later in the spring and hopefully will be again in the future. We flirted with weather and got some.

In Atlanta, the courses are just beginning to green up well.  Unlike Augusta National, many of the courses have bermuda grass (rather than rye).  Bermuda seems to like warmer nights in the Spring before they erupt in green.

I would actually recommend May or June.

I could add Atlanta Country Club to the rota.

I am not sure there are enough quality golfers on this site representing the East Coast as there are in the West!  Your numbers may be small in players, high in scores!

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

John, sorry to hear about Dale Brown.  I hope his stroke is minor.
If you East Coasters need a coach, Ben Howland is no longer in the area.

Carlyle:

Would be interested in an East Coast King's Putter.  Atlanta is a good venue.  Like Mike Sweeney it depends on travel schedule and timing, etc.
Will try to drag Ed Baker with me.
Best

Why not the greater New York area, it seems to be very well represented on the site; and the drive is possible from the south and the north.

Andrew, I am sure Carlyle would love that. One of the best things about the west coast Kings Putter is the GCA guys from all over. I got to finally meet Mike, George and Geoffrey from your part of the world this year.

is the highly acclaimed Ferdinanda (sp?) Beach Muni available?  ;)
Fer.NAN.Di.Na

If anyone wants to do a winter getaway when it is cold everywhere else, I can work on an Orlando junket.  Orlando appeals because of cheap air travel, rock bottom car rental rates, and abundant hotel supply.  Golfers will be surprised at the number of very good daily-fee options opened in the last three years including Walkabout, Mystic Dunes, and North Shore.

I will be starting a feature "What's New in Central Florida" soon and adding to it as I play all of our new 2003 offerings.  I've seen Harmony and Walkabout so far and will get it going when I have the time.

As for Amelia Island, it is a bit remote for people looking to fly in for a quick weekend.  No easier to get to than Cuscowilla and not as good of a golf course.

We've had two "official" GCA outings here in the northeast.  The first at Yale and the second at Inniscrone.  They were well attended and a good time was had by all (I presume).

We've had numerous get togethers as well. I'm sure there will be ample opportunity for additional gatherings.  My friend Lynn, we probably will have high scores with lots of really pathetic golf but at least we have more then three quality courses to embarasss ourselves on  ;D

The west coast version is for the King's Putter.  The east coast version should be called "Ran's Old Bag".   ;D  Whoever loses gets to use Ran's ancient bag for the next year.  You can see it in a pic or two in the GCA course profiles (#14 at NGLA comes to mind).

Geoff,

Did the 3 you refer to include Rustic Canyon?  Just curious who you think doesn't belong if it did!

the airy voice is back:

the way these things tend to be made reality is if someone just takes the lead and organizes it... that was Ran or his designees for the "official" outings GC mentions, Ed Getka and/or Tom Huckaby for The King's Putter... talk is great but setting a date, making reservations, etc. turns this into reality....

If you organize it, they will come....

TKP in spring, ROB in fall....

Scott- Yes Rustic Canyon is absolutely included in a list of quality courses (anywhere) not just the greater LA area.

The facts are that over the past 2 years there have been numerous GCA "outings" official and unofficial, open and secret.  The most successful and enduring of these--the Kings Putter--was both unofficial and open and successful for these reasons, even though it was actually derided by some of the purists on this site for those facts.

The keys to these things is, as Nike used to say--JUST DO IT!  Somebody, anybody, grab the possibility by the balls and organize a time and place.  Build the event, and they will come, eventually.

I was more interested to hear what was NOT included in the 3 quality L.A. area courses.  ;)   Bel-Air?

Scott- my using 3 as the number of quality courses in the area was obviously a facetious reply to Lynn's comments which he made probably having only seen my game among the millions of northeastern golfers  :).

As a northern californian for almost five years long ago I have not played enough in southern california and I inherited the friendly rivalry between north and south. I've not played Belair but Rustic, Riviera and LACC North most certainly deserve credit as quality courses.

PS- no one in their right mind would play very hard to win Ran's old bag.
