New Course - Highland Pacific, Victoria BC
« on: June 09, 2010, 12:36:01 PM »
Not many courses are opening anywhere, but a new course, Highland Pacific, has opened in Victoria.  I haven't played it but may have the chance later this summer.

6,600 yards, par 71.  Chris Young is the architect.

Here is an article on the opening:

With a base rate around $60, the course would fall into the higher end of the "affordable" category.  I don't know the Victoria market well enough to say how the course will fare.

It's nice to see a new course opening - other than that one in Oregon, it seems pretty quiet these days.

Was going to give it a try last time I was in Victoria when they just had 9 open but the weather didn't cooperate.

Has Chris Young done anything else?

Having lived in the area for almost 10 years now, I know the course will do very well.  In Victoria there is only two decent good $50-$80 courses, Cordova Bay and Olympic View.  Cordova Bay does really well because it's a solid, fair, well conditioned public course.  Olympic is run by GolfBC as isn't quite up the same standard as Cordova and is located in the ever growing and busy area of Langford.  Bear Mountain's new Valley Course does not receive anywhere near the same amount of local play because it's out of the way, overpriced and not very forgiving despite being new a fresh.

Unfortunately for all the public players they do not have access to Royal Colwood, Gorge Vale, Uplands or Victoria Golf Club.  Left over is Cedar Hill (par 67 muni, fun to play), Arbutus Ridge (weak layout surrounded closely by a cookie cutter late 89's housing development), Glen Meadows (a great property that needs a serious remake) and some par 3 and executive courses.

Highland Pacific has lots of things going for it.  It's brand new, has good marketing, weak competitors and a very dedicated staff.

If Highland Pacific provides a great value for the price and people enjoy the course, then it will only succeed.

Has Chris Young done anything else?

Chris shaped Bigwin Island and used to work for Boyd Barr.
He did a bunch of work with me at Catarqui and I really like Chris a lot.

Congratulations to him.

Not yet, hoping to get out there next week.  I have see and few pictures of the newest 9 and they have some solid looking holes.  Of course photographs don't tell the whole story.

Jordan - please post an update if you play it.  I may be in Victoria in July and will try to make it there.

It certainly looks/sounds more playable than most new courses built in BC in recent years.
