Gentlemen (and ladies if there is one left beside my wife):

Aside from the requisite screaming argument with Wayne Morrison - which seems to be the inevitable cul-de-sac where opinionated sots end up on this board anymore - I've been absent. Thus, I cannot comment intelligently (beyond the occasional lurking wannabe) as to the propriety or correct use of all those annoying, sophomoric and vaguely homosexual emoticons.

Where the word "emoticon" claims its Genesis (capitalized in deference to Peter Gabriel et al.) is beyond me;  the *point* I am trying to get across is these useless pieces of superfluous code have become little more than a literary crutch by which the lower orders may now express their puny thoughts without the necessity of being forced to compose clear, cogent prose.

I'll admit to using the occasional putrid smiley-face, but only when hopelessly over-served; inevitably while trying to placate one of our schoolmarm twats with nothing better to do than spend days trying to disprove the unassailable fact that C.B. Macdonald is the *real* genius behind Merion - and certainly not Hugh Wilson or Wayne Morrison's great-uncle Rastus who, though related to John Shippen by lineage, was actually the inventor of the sand wedge - not Eugene Saraceni who incidentally changed his name as the Wicker Basket Society has a policy against Italian Catholics.

But I digress . . . . . yet not too far.

You see, the last time I checked in on this site, Tommy had promised to send me a copy of "Supper's Ready" off "Foxtrot" but was evidently too damned busy upholding the honor of Merion - or drinking vino on the beach with his new chick - to remember his promise to the long lost Armenian.

So, as you guys are still leaning on  :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'(   this kind of stuff instead of using our accumulated insight - for instance - towards speculative insights as to where Raynor's "2nd Fishers Island" could be built, I see no hope for any of your lot.

Except Uncle Bob, who remains my hero.

For the rest of you: It is one thing to engage in 'group literary masturbation,' but quite another to allow it to degenerate to such a hollow level that even the lowliest newbie is not the slightest bit intimidated to chime in his half-baked drivel.

For shame.    :'(

I've no other salient pontifications. There is nowhere to go but up. With so many newborn plebeians vomiting  entrails from their 'Philosophy-of-Aesthetics' class, I can hardly follow the music on these threads.

Beethoven to Punk Rock, all in less than 10 years. Such are the pitfalls of egalitarianism.

At least that idiot Johnny Thunders was amusing in his invective.

It could be the other way around.  i.e. a literary crutch the upper orders use to make clear the meaning of their deeper thoughts to the puny minds of the helplessly unperceptive.

I actually made an online remark to Tom Huckaby and he thought I was serious because I overlooked the emoticon.

 ::)

Not true.  In that case, I knew you weren't serious but were rather jibing me, and that was just fine as we are friends enough for that to happen!  I responded as I did because I figured many people might not read it as you and I did, thus I wanted to clarify the issue lest I get into bigger trouble for my previous kidding post.

As for the use of emoticons, of course they are a literary crutch.  I was just unaware any of us were attempting great works of literature in here.

Its a Gib sighting...long time no see lost amigo.  What cave have you been hiding in lately?

I don't see the harm in using them as long as they are not overused like Bob suggests.  I did complete 3-4 college level English/Writing classes but thats about as far as I took things.

While many of my posts are often incoherent and lacking in structure, given more time and a real reason to write that way, I can put together a well thought out and written piece of work.  However on GCA.com, its just all about having some fun and getting the basic message across right?  8)

Huckster and Kalen,

That speaks directly to the ageless argument between form and function, no? To me, the primary allure of this little corner of cyberspace is not really the subject matter - although I am an admitted "architecture get-a-life - but the incredibly lofty altitude of the discourse.

GCAtlas is little more than a chat room devoted to a subject so arcane that only a tiny percentage of golfers have sufficient knowledge to grasp these concepts - let alone contribute something besides empty-headed tripe. Yet, in some small way, this website wields influence; I believe the *reason* for its gravitas lies as much in the quality of our prose as the debates themselves.

Emoticons themselves do not cheapen the idea, but the injudicious use of such a pedestrian crutch tends to diminish the overall visceral impression of the discussion. Fuzzy dice do not belong hanging from the mirror of a Ferrari.

Plus, our monarch hath deemed posts cluttered with tawdry, dime store tchotchke offensive, so that is the end of the discussion.

Now onto business: I still assert Raynor routed out Cypress Point and believe the long lost original plans will one day be uncovered - unless they were destroyed with everything else when Robert Hunter's house burned to the ground. That cloying socialist probably hid Raynor's plans for fear his subterfuge would be exposed.

I'm going to organize a seance to contact the ghost of Marion Hollins. Let's see what Shackelford and Doak have to say about that!

Gib:

Fair enough.  Just remember our monarch decreed that the use of MORE THAN ONE per post be utterly cryit downe, with which I agree.  But if one can be used to spare feelings and/or convey intent in a hurried world, then I am all for the use of such.

Admittedly, however, I look at this place far more as a gathering of weird like-minded friends than any source of high discourse.  So obviously I'd look at this quite differently.

Welcome back, in any case.

Emoticon hopefully unnecessary.

The Raynor routing map for CPC hangs, framed, above the third urinal in Everglades Club, right next to the Alhambra Mosque aperiodic tiles. Raynor's signature is scratched out however, and above it appears the name "Norman MacBeth." I always figured this was some kind of stage name joke, like "Norman Einstein." Maybe some of the regulars can comment.

Now, bring me the routing map of Foulpointe!

I'd ask for a new emoticon to be added to the mix. Not the dancing banana but the applauding wildly emoticon, i.e. a beaming face with two small arms and tiny little hands clapping together furiously, as if in applause. A couple of springy little legs allowing the emoticon to jump up out of his seat as he applauds would add a nice touch. Just for the times when we really want to say "thank you, and very well done" to a fellow poster, but are too lazy to type out the words. We could name him Alan.

Peter, could I suggest a modification to the name Alan, and call him, Thingy?

Quote
May I suggest that the use of more than one 'Smiley Face' per post,
requires a dollar contribution to the Evans Scholaship Fund?

Sir Boab, as the sleeping giant braniac by the bay, Gib,  rises and so urgently points out our lower order's dependence an overuse of said literary crutches of emoticons in efforts to scribble out and communicate our puny thoughts, I have to question why we'd want to contribute to an educational subsidy when transgressing the line of one per post?  Shouldn't we at least agree to pay our excessive use of emoticon fines to a drinking or bar tab fund, rather than anything too supportive of some kid's educational advancement?  I question whether it really is in our lot's best interest to expand a class of an intelligencia that may soon seek to dominate us vaguely homophobic and sophmoric legions and require us to be cogent in our communications.

Or, maybe we could pay the fines to a fund to contribute to a Dubbya Presidencial Liberarie?  That can't hurt us lower orders nun...

Personally, I don't care for emoticons and I use them all the time.

Why?  ??? ??? ???

Because each time I left one off, thinking the joke was obvious, someone complained.

It's pretty pitiful when you have to explain things to someone that should be patently obvious, but one thing this site shows is that people read waaaaaaaaaaaay more malicious intent into every single post (even this one) than there is. (Just stick your toe into one of the Merion threads if you don't believe me.)

I'd like to think that members who know me would give me some benefit of the doubt, but even this has been repeatedly shown to be an erroneous assumption.

So, sorry, you're going to continue to see emoticons from yours truly, and I'd be more than happy to make the occasional donation to the scholarship fund.

 :-* :'( :-\ :-X :-[ :P ::) ??? 8) :o :( >:( ;D :D ;) :)

Well, someone put on his T-shirt inside-out today!

Sheesh. What a grouch.

This is actually the perfect example of why I use emoticons. I wasn't grouchy at all why I typed this; it was merely an attempt to explain my actions.

Go Pens - at least score a goal!

 :)

P.S. How much do I owe for this post? I quoted myself - already a faux pas in the extreme - and the quotation had a ton of emoticons.

Gib,

Was that Robert Hunter house burning an accident or....? Could be a movie plot--for a very small audience--but there have been worse. [No emoticons used in deference to Messrs. Huntley and Kelly]

I knew you were kidding, but I doubt others did.

It's sad that we need to convey our intent, but, heck, I need emoticons even in my private life: my wife is constantly shaking her head and telling waiters, tellers, whomever, that I'm kidding.

Sad.

I mean, really, when was that last time someone went on a high cheese diet?
