NGLA- what to look out for!!!
« on: May 26, 2010, 05:38:39 PM »
Hi guys- just been offered the chance to play National this Friday.  Obviously very excited and as it may be my one and only go I dont want to come off having not looked out for something I later regret.

As a North Berwick lad I will obviously be telling them how a real Redan should look and play.....joking of course.

I was also lucky enough to play Friar's Head and Maidstone the last few days so will be sure to post about all 3 when I get back home in a week or so.

So, what to look out for at National....Eden, Cape, Redan, Alps I know- what else!!

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

When you get on the third tee, look across the water, and the house in the woods with the two chimneys is the house that CB Macdonald lived in. Also, when you get to the halfway house and you see it has now been outfitted with electricity for the first time in club history, comment on that, you will look like an old timer.

Simon, just go and let the place astound you.  There's no need to study up to try to know every inch beforehand because it can't compare to actually being there and seeing all the great fwy undulations, enormous hurly-burly greens and historic holes...as well as the terrific atmosphere at the club.  If you go without any expectations, it will fill your heart with all the beauty of every golf dream you ever had.  Have a great time!

Simon,

I played there about 7 years ago in mid July.  That was pre-GCA for me.  I really didn't know that much about the course.  For me the 1st 3 holes were really difficult because the grass was very high, I couldn't really tell where I should be hitting, and I didn't have a great caddy.

My advice is study the info on this site and look at the routing.  It will help you get comfortable for your round.  After the 1st 3 holes the course feels a little easier to navigate.  At least it did for me.

I love how you can see the giant flag and clubhouse at Shinnecock from several places on the course.

From time to time there are solid pieces of information and advice that pop up on this site, however none have been more spot on than Mr. Mayhugh's last post!!

Look out for the strong possibility that you may have a new favorite course come Friday night.

The caddies are excellent and will make the 36 hole hike easy.

Lunch in the Birdcage, drinks after in the locker room!

I also suggest you wander over through the trees to the right of the 10th fairway....I cant think of too many better inland views than that one

Look out for "the magic windmill" as Gib calls it.

As for the course, you will fall in love with the eventually, for me it was on my second visit.

So many unique features, I have never seen a course remotely like it.

I couldn't stop taking photos with the windmill in the distance.  On my

first trip I didn't bring a camera and we played in 2.5 hours, I didn't look

around nearly enough to fully appreciate the course's unique musueum-like quality.

Josh...

I saw those paintings a couple of weeks ago when Al took me upstairs for a look at your irrigation system.  The punchbowl green/windmill/17th hole was the first that grabbed my eye.  Your artwork is a thing of beauty.

Wow! I just stopped feeling bad that you didn't get up to Dornoch with us. That's one hell of a golf trip!

Enjoy.

Look out for me in the bushes near the first tee ready to whack you with a 9 iron and promptly steal your spot on the tee!

Other than that, enjoy your wardrobe to Narnia, Simon.  I think it's going to change your perspective like it has for many others here.

You might want to take a slow loop around the first and sixth greens.
