Kind of a funny/sad story about Essex: I dated a girl in high school who lived just off one of the fairways. I wasn't much of a golfer then and knew nothing about the history and pedigree of Essex. When I would stay at her house on weekends, we would grab some of her dad's clubs and wander out on the course and slap some balls around. I had no idea I was on one of the great courses in New England. I have some fond memories of her but can't for the life of me recall a single detail about the course. Tragic.

Dan,

I used to play Winchester as a youth with a friend. Zero appreciation other than the grass was greener than the munis I usually played...

Myopia and Essex seem to be 1 and 2 or 2 and 1 depending on who the rater is.

Some feel Salem is better than both...

The three compliment each other very well actually, as Myopia's course generally represents 1900, Essex 1915, and Salem 1925.

I would think that Myopia would get the common rater nod due to the difficulty of getting on, and the fact that it is a ridiculously unique and strange place.  If ever there was a real "Mayflower Club," it is Myopia.

I'm on record as liking ECC the best out of the three, as a great meld of architecture, strategy, history, and playability, but we might have to go to hundredths of a point to set them apart...

In comparison, Myopia's weakness is probably playability...although it is one of the best match play courses in the country with all the great half-par holes.  Salem is a longer, more "championship" layout, and probably more fair than both MHC and ECC.  It's greens are the highlight, and they are representative of a more developed mid-career Ross style.  Salem's "weakness" is not really anything to do with the holes so much as its setting being a bit less inspiring than the open-air formats at MHC and ECC.

Of course the joke of it all is that this is like comparing three bowls of the best ice cream you have ever eaten, just with different toppings.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Why doesn't Boston get more love as a golf city, at least on a per capita basis?

I think it's the prevailing view that all the greats are private.  It is definately true, but that isn't unique in the US...the best courses in all cities are generally private, save for a few areas.

I think there are plenty of good public courses within 100 miles of Boston (and even more if you talk NH, VT and ME).  There are so many interesting places for the GCA member...the general public only thinks of the top several (Pinehills, Waverly, Redtail) with the large pricetag when there are MANY others that are less expensive, and even some designed by Ross like the big Boston privates!

We do experience a bit of a dropoff after maybe the top 7-10 layouts...but those just below have the same pedigree as many of the top 10...Boston only has two or three that host tournaments on a national stage these days.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
