Golf Course Maintenance Blogs
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:07:50 AM »
The following are several Golf Course Maintenance blogs that Superintendents from around the country are using to communicate with their membership. I think that it is a GREAT tool, that included explanations and photos of practices that are happening on the golf course. These sites are packed with useful information.

TPC Sawgrass- http://www.tpcsawgrassmaintenance.blogspot.com/
Oakland Hills CC- http://ohccturf.blogspot.com/
Skokie CC- http://skokieturf.blogspot.com/
Minikahda Club- http://minikahdagrounds.blogspot.com/
CC of Castle Pines- http://cccpgcm.blogspot.com/
Northmoor CC- http://northmoorturf.blogspot.com/
Corral de Tierra CC- http://corralmaintenance.blogspot.com/
Pine Tree GC- http://pinetreegm.blogspot.com/

Here's another really good one from Chris Tritabaugh at Northland Country Club, a sweet Ross that overlooks Lake Superior in Duluth, Minn.

I think it is really informative.

From the perspective of a communicator, I love the super blogs because the good ones explain not only what is being done, but why it is being done. I think it reduces the number of members that bitch about what is being done or that claim that the super is a clown.

Here's the link to Chris' blog.

Thanks to someone mentioning that Skokie CC having a Golf Course Maintenance Blog last week while they were hosting the Western Am, I've become very interested in these Blogs that various Superintendents have started and maintain. They really are a fantastic learning tool for anyone interested in golf courses and also a neat way to see the same courses in different lights. Most of the blog owners keep their website stacked with current pictures. It's also neat to note that many of these blogs show GCA as one of their "favorite" websites.

I was going to start a new thread but saw that Anthony had already started one a few months back that I missed.

Some of my favorites have been:

Skokie CC (Chicago)
http://skokieturf.blogspot.com/

Onwentsia (Chicago)
http://www.oc1895.net/

Minikahda (Minneapolis)
http://minikahdagrounds.blogspot.com/

Glen Echo (St. Louis)
http://geccgcm.blogspot.com/

Castle Pines (Denver)
http://cccpgcm.blogspot.com/

TPC Sawgrass
http://tpcsawgrassmaintenance.blogspot.com/

Other than the ones above listed by myself and Anthony, does anyone have one or two that they follow?

I do a weekly e-mail that goes out to all the members. My blog is pretty basic, and I use it to link the reader from the weekly e-mail blast to more in-depth information. I sometimes go many weeks without updating the blog, but I never miss sending out the weekly e-mail.

Brad:

Great blog! Your new workstation setup is pretty cool, and I liked the entry about snowblowing the greens during the winter. Also, your Oakmont entry was great as it toured the course from more of a maintenance viewpoint.

Thanks for posting.

I came across our very own Sean McCue's 'behind the scenes' blog for the Country Club at Castle Pines. (Actually, it's in his GCA signature.)  It's definitely worth your time:

Not only do I find course maintenance blogs and the like interesting and informative but, as a club member, the fact that a Super, Course Manager, Head Greenkeeper or Curator or whatever title the top course maintenance person holds, is prepared to be open about their trade and the work they and their staff are undertaking gives me a great deal of confidence in those looking after courses. More such blogs please.

All the best to Supers, Course Managers, Head Greenkeepers and Curators everywhere.

I just found this site this spring and I would agree it is one of my favorites, coming from a fellow superintendent.

This website is handy because you can check the latest postings from superintendents. Its broken down by geographical region with the most recent posts at the top.  Not only that but you also have access to latest greenskeeper magazines and the latest twitter feeds.

www.cdgaturf.org contains a weekly scouting report prepared by the CDGA in house agonomist which collects data from around the area and comments on problems/trends.  It also reports on current research and contains links to other blogs.  Very informative.
