Aerial of the Day #55 - 25 Mar 2002
« on: March 25, 2002, 06:05:41 AM »
Continuing on the "heathen" theme from Friday's tough one, this one also is laden with tall fescue.  It doesn't take a genius to notice some strategic-looking holes, not to mention and interesting hole in the bottom right, with the tee boxes located on what appears to be the dike of the pond.

I'm curious to know if all those little trees that dot the courses were already there or were planted.  Otherwise, a few years down the road and we could have the Cal Club pics, but Before and After are reversed.

Where are the cart paths?   :)

One would probably never guess there is as much water out there as is evident from the picture.

Confidentially, I think even Thomas Jackson would approve of this course.

Some courses surprise me the low number of responses and people who know them.  Especially considering more than one person who posts on this site had something to do with this course.  Remember to take heed at who DOES know the course.

Never played this course, but your clue just gave away.

Scott -- Thomas Jackson would approve of it --
specifically, or in general?  ::)

I'm officially embarrassed!!  My most recent of 3 lifetime aces was on that little bitty hole in the lower right corner.  Without the clues - I hadn't a clue!!

The tee box in question (#11, I think) is hard by the lake but not so much balanced on a dyke.

When the rough is up in the summer, this course is way to hard for a crooked ball striker.

I hear this one started out strong in the ratings game and has been losing ground ever since (a la Shadow Creek).

Tom Paul can speak to the 2nd 18 they're building here - must speak well for the demand for private course golf in the area!

This is Stonewall GC, a Tom Doak and Gil Hanse (two posters here) design in Elverson, PA, way outside Philadephia, close to Reading and closer to Lancaster than Philadelphia, but Philly is where the members mostly hail from.  Before Pacific Dunes, Doak called Stonewall his greatest design.  Jay Sigel had a big influence on Stonewall getting built.  Not sure if Bill Kittleman was involved.  There are plans to build another 18-hole course here.  Stonewall is walking only, hence no paths.  It is also hilly.

I lived in the Philly area while the course was being built, and I remember the Inquirer's series of articles on the construction of Stonewall.  I was also in the area when Hartefeld National was being built, and they (Davis Sezna) promised $30 green fees  ::).  Really.

Clue alert:  "Confidentially" referred to ("genius") Doak's Confidential Guide, of which he gave Stonewall an 8 and considered hole #18, which literally abuts the clubhouse (goes NNW from lower right corner), as one of his greatest holes.

Thomas Jackson is the "General", as in General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
