Need advice on Philly golf
« on: May 07, 2010, 01:06:02 PM »
My buddy and I are in Philly next week and tried to get on to Merion but apparently unaccompanied play has to be approved by a committee and all the members that we know aren't available that day so we have access to play Aronimink or Stonewall.  I need some input into which to play as we only have time for one round.

Suggestions?

JS:  flip a coin!

But if I had to lean one way, with the Tiger tournament coming up over the July 4th weekend, I would go with the 'Mink.  That way you'll be able to enjoy the telecast further.

Great Ross vs Great Doak, hard to say.  I'd go with Aronimink, since they are having a tour event this year.

Depends on what you want.  Both arre excellent, but I'd go with Aronimink.  It has one of the best set of greens around.

Jason,   AGC without a doubt over Stonewall. The other course to consider is Lancaster-A bit of a drive from Philly but certainly as good as anything in Philly including the one that you can't play - Merion. Just another ho hum Flynn design! Huntingdon Valley is a great track as well-hell of a nice membership when we visited last August. Have fun,   Jack

I have not played the new course at Stonewall but Amink has a big lead over the old course at Stonewall and it might be the best conditioned course in Philly.

Play the 'Mink.  Reallly nice people, great conditioning, and you can see Ron Prichard's rescue of the original Ross.  Aparently, RTJ messed up 'Mink, and Ron brought it back.

I found it to be a very enjoyable golf course with some good Ross features.

I'd definitely read up on the history of the course before you head out.
