Cross Bunkers - a photo thread
« on: May 07, 2010, 04:54:30 AM »
Anyone got any photos of cross bunkers?...

Big ones, small ones, sandhill ones, no longer existing ones, perpendicular ones, diagonal ones?

As long as they are "almost" genuine in their crossing the entire fairway...

Unfortunately I don't have any photos... That's why I'm asking

Thanks,
Ally

Ally

I have been looking through my books in recent weeks and I can't find but one pic of what could be a crossing bunker covering what looks to be (has to be its so wide!) pretty much the entire fairway.  All the others are the natural carries over sand such as Cader, the 18th at Rye, Sandy Parlour, Maiden, 4th at RND etc.  It made me think if this is what was meant by cross bunkers in the old days, but i don't think so.  I came across a few of those horse jump deals, but they all had space to go around.  Not that it mattered much because many were off the tee and acted as "top shot" bunkers.  Not many folks would have aimed left or right - so perhaps this is what is meant by cross bunkers - should be carried, but if not...

Ally, If you put postcode WA16 7AY in Google Earth or similar you'll find several examples of cross bunkers. Wilmslow Golf Club. I might take some pictures for you.

Thanks Mark, Sean, Tony.... At Portmarnock, there was a proliferation of top-shot cross bunkers, usually very geometric and placed two side by side... If I could post pictures, I'd put up an old 1956 aerial from The National Library which shows these... The tee-shot on the 5th used to be over an open sand dune as well, much like that one at Westward Ho... Don't have a photo of that though...

7th hole Wilmslow Golf Club these cross bunkers are 105 yards (centre) and 68 yards (right) from the green on this 491-yard par 5. Playing with the prevailing wind, these bunkers are of no concern for the good player, but exactly right for the short hitters like me.

The 8th hole has a line of three cross bunkers on the diagonal, the left hand one being 101 yards from the green, the right hand 80. It is a 437 yards par 4, also played with the prevailing wind., so these bunkers are, once again, perfectly placed for me.

The 15th is my nemesis hole. It plays from a tee sheltered in the trees, but those trees are unkind to my left-handers slice. As the hole is a dog-leg to the right  I am invariably struggling to clear these bunkers 97 yards from the green on this 423-yard par 4.

Thanks again Mark - I like those diagonal ones on the 8th...

Westhill has some good ones (clearly seen on Google Earth) on 14 & 18... It also has proper Top-shot bunkers on 11....

Little Aston could qualify in a couple of places...

There's plenty in the UK really... Would like to see some really big ones though...

16th at Ganton is a serious one, described by Patric Dickinson as a 'real Superintendent of a cross-bunker'. Such has been the progress made that it is sadly no longer any kind of threat to a good player.

The mention of a cross bunker brought the image of Hell on #14 on TOC to mind.

This is the carry cross bunker on the 10th at Troon, as pictured in Hunter's The Links in 1926.

Here I have two photos I took last year (2009) showing the two cross bunkers on hole Nr. 7 of the "Le Vineuil" course at Golf de Chantilly north of Paris. It's a par 4 hole slight dog leg to the right playing 396m from the back tees, the cross bunkers are approx 120m in front of the green - they are also a tromp d'oueil - when you are 80 - 100m in front of the bunkers you think that the green is immediately behind the bunkers and not 120m behind - This hole is an original from the 1920s designed by Tom Simpson.

The next hole Nr.8 has three even more scary cross bunkers, but I was busy with my hickories so forgot to take photos of those...maybe next time...
