More bunker construction at Old Mac
« on: May 09, 2010, 03:43:03 AM »
My last bunker post stirred a lot of interest so I thought to feed the fire a little more prior to the opening at Old Mac.  There are so many different types of bunkers at Old Mac, some formal and some not.  It is one of the most interesting collections of bunkers I have seen anywhere.

Ties being installed into bunker short of #16 Alps green.

Some scrapes on the right side of the long hole, #6.  With a good summer wind they are bound to get a bit deeper....

A visually deceptive field of bunkers, dividing the 17th fairway.

The Sahara bunker on #3

A dune in play separting holes 10 and 4 (running parallel 10 goes N, 4 goes S).  The same dune spills out to become a hazard right of 5 green.

This one is not in play but it looks cool!

This one is no longer in play because it was sodded over, middle of 10th fairway

There are lots more, including the revetted bunkers on holes 2(eden) and 11(road hole).  The cape hole (9) huge waste area right of fairway and the Hell bunker on #6.  See how many scrapes you can find if you wander from the wide fairways.  If you think Old Mac looks good now, wait a few years and you can look at the bunkers on Pacific Dunes to see into the future :)
I love the smell of hydroseed in the morning.

Looks great,  everything seems to tie together nicely, can't wait to check it out in July... I particularly like the scrapes..... this all sort of reminds me of the early pictures of NGLA I saw in the Evangelist of Golf... Or maybe I am mistaken... I know they were a little more crude than what is shown in these new pictures.

Anyone know why a centerline bunker would've been sodded over?

Here is a cool one of the bunkers on the inside of the cape hole.  I love this look.

Adam:  There are still two centerline bunkers on that hole.  We started with three, and they set up great from one of the tees, but really awkward from the other tee ... three bunkers all in a row.  We decided to take out the one that was only +/- 190 yards off the tee, to make a bit more room between the others for short hitters to land the ball.

Thanks Jeffrey. Already booked for my trip, but it is 9 months away! Your post just keeps building the anticipation.
