If it was my trip I would play Portrush Valley on Tuesday afternoon and then leave all of Wednesday for travelling. Travel on Saturday and return to RCD on Sunday. After playing all the other courses on the trip and returning to RCD it will only reconfirm for you the greatness of RCD.

You may want to check the Saturday and Sunday availibility of courses for play. In the past Ballybunion has been closed to visitors on weekends and other courses limit the times made available to visitors.

Brent

With the long drive to Lahinch - I'd play Co. Sligo or Enniscrone on the way (AM Wednesday).

BTW - check out the Cliffs of Moher near Lahinch.

You have also left a big drive back from Ballybunion to BFS. I'd consider a stopover at Portmarnock or Co. Louth

NB: I have not seen TEC to comment re: it

Again, thanks for all the great advice.

It's my brother and me on this trip.  If a GCAer would like to join for a round it would be great.  Trip is from June 13 - 21.

Jud - Cashen is on the house as a 2 for 1.  Would love to change it out but it is too good of a deal.

I'm leaning toward Enniscrone on Wednesday.  It looks like a well designed and fun track.  For Saturday Dooks looks to fit the bill.  It would be great to stay in the same place for a couple of nights.  No doubt that the Dublin area has some great golf as well, but it will likely have to fit in another trip.

Appreciate the advice.  I am seriously excited for some Irish links golf.

Brent

Hi Brent

Enniscrone is a great choice and Dooks is a seriously beautiful course situated on the famous Ring of Kerry with fabulous views of the Dingle Peninsula

you might be able to get a discounted deal if you played both Dooks and Dingle golf course - stay in the town of Dingle for a couple of nights and make sure you take the Connor Pass at least once in the daytime either coming to or leaving from Dingle

Gents,

I have been searching the archives and appreciate the loads of useful information.

That being said - I have a question for those of you in the know.  This year we are headed to Ireland and have the following schedule:

Sunday Morning Arrive BFS - open

Monday - RCD morning

Tuesday - Dunluce morning

Wednesday - open

Thursday - Lahinch morning

Friday - Ballybunion Old & Cashen

Saturday - open

Sunday - open

Monday Morning - depart BFS

How would you fill in the blanks?  I would like to see as many good tracks as possible without overdoing it.  As you know I am really looking forward to the links courses of the Emerald Isle.

Thanks!

Fly back from Shannon.

or drop lahinch and ballybunion-so much good stuff closer (Portrush Valley,Ardglass, Portstewart, castlerock,Portsalon,Rosapenna x2,Portnoo,Donegal,Sligo,Enniscrone,Carne to say nothing of Dublin area (2 hours from RCD) County Louth(one hour from RCD),
You're looking at 2 days of 7-8 hour drives
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer (and I enjoy driving)

Looks like I'll have to me more blunt... I think you are MAD planning somewhere for the Wednesday if you are trying to get from Portrush to Lahinch, especially via the west route...

Leave it for travelling and if you get to Lahinch in time, jump on that late evening (or even Doonbeg which is 10 minutes down the road)... You won't be disappointed in playing it twice...

Listen to Padraig and those that live in Ireland...

Brent has stated a few times he wants to see as much as he can.  Okay, I agree that his itinerary is not to my taste as it involves way too much travel, but Brent is willing to put in the windshield time so more power to him.  He asked specific questions within the bounds of an already mostly planned trip so the best responses are those which answer the questions rather than those which question Brent's sanity - tee hee.

With respect - why is yours / Padraig's opinion any better than the rest of us that have played golf around Ireland ?

Whilst I agree that the drive from Portrush to Lahinch is going to be a long and taxing one - I've done longer / worse.

I'm not ready to get Brent committed yet... OK, I'll go with this... If you go the West route where you may or may not get lost (road signs in Ireland don't work) and it may or may not take you 10 hours...., I'd go with Sligo or Enniscrone (as opposed to Carne) just to keep you somewhere on track... The drive isn't that much nicer because you'll still be driving inland rather than taking coastal routes for the majority of your journey... and Ireland is only about the coast (sorry midlanders)...

I'd therefore be tempted to go the East route, stopping at Portmarnock, County Louth or The Island (all of which are approx 10-15 minutes times two off the main road)... Or just get to the West and see Doonbeg... You'll relax better that way... (i'd still play Lahinch twice though)...

Kevin, firstly, I wasn't exactly being serious...

Secondly, are you serious with that question?... A journey that can take one hour on one day can take two and a half the next day at the same time... Every hour is rush hour in Ireland and nothing makes sense when it comes to road signs or traffic queues... (OK, I exaggerate a bit - improvements over the last 10 years have been significant but only on the main roads)

Guess I'm just not a 14 golf course and 40 hours driving in 7 days kinda guy...

You and me both!  I do recall a certain youngster taking a mad train trip from London to Prestwick for a game - returning on the same day!  He seemed to enjoy it even if I thought he was bonkers.  Some folks are more keen than others.

Jud - Cashen is on the house as a 2 for 1.  Would love to change it out but it is too good of a deal.

I'm all for getting a deal, but based on my experience, I'd either see what the replay rate is on the Old Course, or head directly to the pub.  You have to wonder what it implies about the relative merits of the Cashen that they're willingly throwing it in for free.  Furthermore, the Cashen is far from the easiest walk, so when you quantify the effort/quality ratio, I guarantee that this will pale in comparison to all the other courses mentioned here....Finally, if you insist on playing it, make sure to fortify yourself with some off the local drink before and during.... ;)
