Expanding on Ran's Pebble Beach article
« on: May 02, 2010, 05:09:50 PM »
Hey everybody.  I was researching my Pebble preview and I ran across some interesting comments of Ran's in his web-story on GCA.

He wrote:

"However, H. Chandler Egan is the man most responsible for the course today. He replaced 16 of the 18 greens (leaving MacKenzie’s 8th and 13th greens untouched) and completely re-did the bunkering. The original aerial photos of the re-design show incredibly artistic imitation sand dunes. It is a pity they aren’t restored, at least around the 7th and 17th greens. Still, Egan’s redo is one of the great moments in the development of American architecture."

Let's talk a little further about this.  When did he replace 16 greens?  Is that aerial Ran refers to around somewhere?  Why (or why not, if you disagree) is his re-design such a monumental moment in architecture compared to Neville's original work?

Ran also once said to me that he thought the holes through the Del Monte forest were vastly underestimated.  what are some of your favorite holes that aren't Kodak moments?

Well fellas, the two questions I have are still out there...and I don't have the new book.  When was the redo?  why is it so good?  What are some of your fave holes in the Del Monted Forest...you know, fave holes not on the coastline...

Jay,

Could you possibly post a link to Ran's web story?

This has been brought up on several occasions and the history of the changes at Pebble Beach, to my knowledge, is not well documented. For instance, when Egan's faux dune bunkers were abandoned who is responsible for the formalizing them into the bunkers we know today? I have never received an answer to that question. I for one would be interested in the time line and contributions in just how the course evolved.

I had no idea that Mackenzie did those greens. I thought it typo.
