Aerial of a modern course - what course?
« on: April 27, 2010, 09:02:42 AM »
Not re-starting Aerial of the Day, but I happened to stumble upon a newly available aerial on Google Maps, and thought I'd share it with all.
We can, however, reveal it slowly, AOTD-style, by not revealing it when you know it/get it, but adding new, perhaps clever clues toward
the identity.  Then I would reveal it later in the day.

Like so:

Are we to believe that those who love this course so much would steer us wrong?

I think this course's stock will only continue to rise.

Scott -

The look of the terrain makes me think it is in California.

Where is the sea?  ???   As a Man of The Links I can only navigate via the sea, where is she?  ::)

Do I detect a little over watering too?  :P

No island Greens, looks promising,  ;D  Bunkers in limited numbers but probably enough.  :-\

Bad signs being some distance between Tees/Greens, >:(   so loosing interest now. :'(

Those walks look very short with only a road crossing or two

I will say that it looks more like a necklace than it should - that isn't a clue - but a comment on the eastern holes all in a row.

I heard about a skeptical wife who couldn't believe the course was 'all that'.  By the end, she was a true convert.
I think the course boulder over.   (sorry, just a stream-of-consciousness clue, that was)

Might the Texas mascot be at home at this Pebble Stream Club?

As an aside, I hear they offer fly fishing at the Club as well.

Got it. Not California, but more the country of big skies and neighbors like Ted Turner and Demi Moore. ;)

Scott,

You first clue was a dead give away. Try harder next time.
 :(

EDIT: I forget my clue.
For that neck of the woods it's not far from Jawbone Creek Country Club, that a certain architect said he didn't believe existed.

They have some nice blades for sale in the pro shop.

Don't tri to play this one from the tips.

Many golfers shank it on this course.

I can see some flanking hazards in this picture.

8 holes until the first par 3?  I guess the archie is a fan of asymmetric routings.

I hope they didn't brand Matt Ward for his opinion of the the 18th hole.

Just like a youngster, not reading the directions.... ::)

At night, there's not much to do around this remote, farming area, so the locals and guests have taken up cart-tipping for fun.

That's a great clue. So was your boulder one. Too bad you didn't lead with those.

Not sure where it is...I was assuming Rock Creek.

There are two back to back holes here that look (at least from this view) almost exactly like #15 & #16 at Valley Club of Montecito.  If this is Rock Creek then would love to hear if Tom was influenced by Valley Club at all on these two?  The two holes I am talking about have shared fairways and are about 11PM on the clock.

No! Rock Creek is a Doak 2 or 3 located in a housing development by the same name. Don't understand how you could make such a mistake especially given the first clue.

Yes, this is Tom Doak's Rock Creek Cattle Company, in Deer Lodge, MT, and lauded by several GCAers as being 'all that'.

my clues include: 'steer' and 'stock' = cattle, 'boulder'=rock, 'stream'=creek and 'cart-tipping' refers to an infamous GCAer's escapades at
RCCC last year, witnessed by another.

other clues included 'Big Sky'=Montana, where 'Ted Turner' owns a huge ranch which supplies his "Ted's Montana Grill" restaurant chain with buffalo meat.

Didn't know Demi Moore had a place in MT, I know she lives part of the year in Hailey, ID, near Sun Valley.

Was going to mention Shivas' love for the place (better than Sand Hills) & Matt Ward's insistence that the course is right around the corner
from everyone in the U.S., but the course was outed before that.

About the only thing at 11 (don't know how you tell AM from PM on a clock), would be a road. Perhaps going to the fishing area?

Don't know about 11 pm, but the holes with the shared fairway are #10 and 11 at RCCC - two of the best holes on the course.  #10 green has a really fun reverse redan green and on #11, you have to hug the left bunker, or you fall into a deep, deep swale (hence, the darker green fairway color in the aerial) that you can't see from the tee - and from down there, you can't see a damn thing for your approach.

Shivas:

What's the carry for that bunker on #11 from the back tees (or any tees, for that matter)?
