Philadelphia Cricket Club-Keith Foster restoration
« on: April 27, 2010, 04:10:17 PM »
Although the full restoration project hasn’t been approved by the membership, they already started with the tree removal program.
Prior to this Sunday, I last played the Wissahickon course in October.  When I got to the third hole, I didn’t recognize the place.  Hundreds of trees, including every tree on both sides of the railroad tracks from the 9th tee to the 3 rd green, were gone.
The proposed plan will increase the yardage by 200 yards and reduce par from 71 to 70.  The 7th hole will be “shortened” from a par 5 to a 480 yard par 4.

Yeah, since it has been hidden by trees on either side for years I guess nobody recognized that raised railroad track embankment is very cool looking juxtaposed to golf!

Back in the old days---golf and railroad tracks, railroad tracks and golf; they were like half a pod to the peas.

I'm playing there this Sunday in our final GAP match. I can't wait to see the tree work that has been done.

Love this golf course , just love it.  Lots of fun shots , interesting green sites, fine opener and  a killer finishing hole . A classic Tillinghast for those who don't know the architect.

Although shortish by modern standards , it plays longer than the yardage , perfect for members .  Great outside deck , that many of the Philly courses have , for watching golf after play.  No better place for a cold beverage after a tough round of golf !

Bunkers are really well done, and some of the nicest par fours in the area!

Archie, I would like to disagree with you but all the facts are on your side.   ;D

I love the old course at Philly Cricket.

I love the old course at Philly Cricket.

As Archie said the deck and the chairs above the 18th green are just a great setting to watch play conclude on a super finisher. The clubhouse being as old as it is is really cool as well. Look forward to seeing the completed tree work.

Tom, when I first joined Pensacola CC 15 years ago, there was a depression across the fairway of the 425 yard 18th hole where a rail line crossed over on its way to Naval Air Station Pensacola.  The tracks were long gone but the marks were still there.  The hole was most likely built in 1925 (the first nine was built in 1910 so could have been that old).

Today those marks are gone but not forgotten.

Bill:

The railroad embankment between the 9th and the other side of the course at Philly Cricket is definitely not gone and it never will be. It's a railroad easement and there is probably nothing the club can ever do about that. It is really prominent, particularly on the 9th hole side; it's part of their history and taking out the trees along it and exposing it is really cool, in my opinion.
