I'm putting together a somewhat impromptu, relatively last minute trip to Ballyneal in May and am looking to get a group of 8-9 out to the Chop Hills.  The trip would be Friday May 21-Sunday May 23.  Please shoot me a PM if you're interested and I'll send you additional details on costs, logistics, etc.

Jim, how lucky are the members of this board to have someone so willing to make available one of the most incredible golf courses in the country?  Between your open invitations to Ballyneal and your pay it forward donations, your generosity seems boundless.  I am confident I speak for everyone on this board in saying thank you!  I can't make this trip but look forward to joining you there some day.

Best wishes,

Ed

Jim,

Great offer.  Unfortunately, or otherwise, I have a couple of great courses already lined up for the following week so if I went to Ballyneal as well, I'd probably have to stay there (hey, wait a minute!  ;)).

I could not agree more with Ed.  For those who have not had the privilege of meeting Jim or playing Ballyneal, don't miss out on this opportunity.

Wish I could make it Jim.  I'll be in Disney with the kids that weekend.

Ditto here on the high praise for Jim's generosity and offer to share the experience of Ballyneal.  If you haven't yet experienced this sort of golf in the open terrrain sand-chop hill, American prairie dunesland landscape, there are only a handful of authentic courses of this magnitude of great GCA to play and understand the concept.  A GCA enthusiast's resume isn't complete until you experience this golf-lifestyle, IMHO.

I look forward to the possibility of spending an evening conversing with Jim someday, as one of those engaging gentlemen who really is a champion of spreading the word on where great golf and all its joy can be found.

Jim,

We usually go just once a year but my entire family is going in May to celebrate some milestone birthdays.  Fear not, I don't own mouse ears or a Mickey suit.   ;)

Jim, just curious, how do you get there from Chicago? Through Denver?

How fast do you fellas from Chicago drive?

Be careful of that stretch when you head east from Sterling....

Denver airport exits west. One of the first exits off that road is E-470, North towards Ft. Collins. Take that to I-76 East. At Sterling Colorado, take Hwy. 6 east to Holyoke (watch your speed through the small towns of Fleming and Haxtun). Turn right at the stop light (Interocean). Go south for approx. 5-6 miles to County Road 10 (Two small Blue Hwy signs on right is my clue to turn left.) Go 1 mile east to Rd. #43 (first soft right) then go south for another 5-6 miles. The entrance to Ballyneal is directly across from the silver grain bins (the only structure you will see)  Follow signs to Clubhouse.

Got it, thanks. Seems like it's a lot easier to get to than Sand Hills from what I hear.

Pat,

The drive to Sand Hills isn't difficult at all.  Just keep going through Sterling on I-76 for close to two hours to North Platte, then head north for just short of an hour.  The scenery of the Sand Hills is a joy to behold, as is what awaits when you turn west off of Highway 97.

Scott,

I never go more than 5-6 miles over the speed limit, and it's always been 2:20-2:25 from the Avis lot to the Ballyneal gate.

I'm bumping this thread one last time to round up any interested parties.  This is the only open invite outing I'm doing this year.

Top Ten Memories from a Jim Colton Trip to Ballyneal

1.  Meeting and playing golf with Jim and Mike Leveille
2.  Getting treated like royalty by the staff at Ballyneal and meeting a slew of great members and fellow GCAers
3.  Feeling like you know the course backwards and forwards when teeing up for your seventh round in three days
4.  Great coffee in the morning, perfectly mixed Arnold's between rounds and your favorite New Belgium product on tap at sunset
5.  Knowing that even if the wind is at a 9 on a 1 to 10 scale, the course is immensely playable and still a lot of fun
6.  Ogallala and Gothenburg are only a short drive up the road and make for great warmup rounds
7.  The Seventh
8.  The breakfast burrito (smothered), the sliders and the buffalo bolognese
9.  Playing in under 3 hours, except for the third round on Saturday, which was more like 3:10
10.  Convincing United to leave the door open for a couple more minutes so your host doesn't miss his flight home (after he graciously returned the rental)

Run, don't walk, to get out there the next time Jim extends an open invite.
