What a golf season (so far) in Philly
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:44:58 PM »
I can't believe our weather this year - from 4' of snow in 4 days to almost mid-summer conditions in 7 weeks...

Our course is playing firm and fast - in April.  It's really amazing.   Our head greenkeeper is even having to start summer-
time treatment to protect against some summertime diseases.

For the first time I can remember, we had almost as many spring-time blooms as Augusta during Masters week.

So - Philly is heavenly - How about your area?

It hit 84 degrees in metro-Detroit today when 58 is the average temp this time of year....it's still 76 degrees at 8:50pm...it's like August in April.  Courses still are a little soft, but we've had many very, very nice days already.

Dan,

I played last week at my former club and spoke to the superintendent. His words to me after I complimented him on the great condition of the course, "Too green, too fast."

Dan,

Yesterday, the club that I normally play (NE Ohio) was very firm (most of the time it's fairly wet).  I was able to execute a few bump and runs as well.  Those shots aren't the norm this time of year.

The trees are blooming fast too.  Actually, this is the earliest that I can remember.

Well in the last two weeks I have had 10 days that were golfable.  For Suburban Chicago that is amazing.

I haven't run into the head greenskeeper but I know the assistant is blown away with this much to do this early.

For those in the northern climates, what do the early fast and firm conditions bode for the rest of the summer?  What maintenance issues do supers have if courses don't get their early season allotment of rain?

We've had plenty of rain this past year. Snow cover too.

Sven - there's a lot of h2o in the water table.   Nobody's currently worried about drought.

I was thinking about my post-work 9 hole loop today.  Made a comment that I missed a few shots I should've made.

My friend reminded me that it's April!  Of course I'm rusty, but with this weather, it feels a lot more like June.

Again - Augusta comparison - even the wisteria is in full bloom  up here.  I figure it's 6 weeks early.
