I also think #9 is difficult.  With the wind you feel like you're going to blade it into the clubhouse (which is probably much less scary of a feeling for a member than it is for a guest).  Against the wind you could easily put one on #1 fairway.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Tom, Jason,

I think calling the right side of the 7th at Barnbougle a bailout area is a bit of an exageration.  The swales front and right of the green call for an exacting chip, putt or lob onto a small green.  Keeping the ball on the green is no gimme, particularly down-wind.

For comparison, here are some shots of Kingsley:

#10 at Royal Dornoch. There is no routine up & down if you miss the green.

The extra hole/19th at NSWGC is crazy tough for a sub-100m hole.

11 at The Addington is relentless. Green is long, but also very narrow.

10 at Painswick with its tiny, steep green might also qualify.

A vote here for 7 at Barnbougle. It is great fun when you play for fun but in a tournament I can only imagine the thoughts that would go through my head.
I played it this afternoon and hit a nice 5 iron - 120 to the pin -  that just went long and it is horribe down there.
I would rather have to make 3 at Carnoustie's 16th that Barnbougle 7th.

17 at Lakeview in Toronto is no bargain. Most slope on the smallest green you'll ever see. Anything behind the green or above the hole is dead. Anything short, left or right is almost dead. And at 95 yards, it's between clubs for a lot of people.

#11 at Pacific always looks like there is no bailout area, and there isn't much of one.  With a good wind either for or against, club selection is always a challenge.

11 at Plainfield is one I have always thought looks like a hell of a lot of fun and really tough to boot:
(pics from Ran's profile)

That front bunker sees a lot of balls return down the slope to the player's feet, I'll bet, and probably just as many bladed over the back!

Looks like the 11th at Shinnecock hasn't been mentioned yet, so here it is

Seconded.

Overall, it has caused me the greatest amount of grief over my 41 year golfing addiction.

And recent work has lowered the tee to increase the "hitting to a table top effect."

If scoring average alone is enough of a qualifier, Merion #13 would top my list...after a birdie on my first or second try, my average is about 4.5 over my last dozen or so tries...that's if I take a 6 when I picked up after flailing a few into the lip of the right corner of the big front bunker...I may have never actually gotten out of it...

I actually think the 6th Hole on the West course can play tough as well.  Straight downhill tee shot, sandwedge in your hand, small green with no room to miss.

"In my experience" to me means that I played them.

      3 short dropshot holes

#17 Paxon Hollow     #5 Inniscrone    famous short one at Pocono Manor

Hitting a half wedge to a downhill green is very tough for me.

The extra hole/19th at NSWGC is crazy tough for a sub-100m hole.
Two options on this hole:

1) Hit the green.

3) Reload.

The 10th at Kingston Heath. Not sure I'd qualify it as terrifying, but when the push the pin back into the narrow back of the green and there's a cross breeze, it's challenging enough at 140 yds.
Next!

More than 3, in no particular order.....

14 at Engineers

14 at Maidstone

8 at Rustic Canyon

2 at GCGC

15 at Spyglass (that stinking overhanging tree branch on the left!)

I think #2 at Musgrove Mill is a toughie - ~130 yards and only place to miss is short.  #7 is longer but no picnic either.

A few more to discuss:

7 at RCD
9 at Lakota Canyon (I forget how long this hole played, possibly longer than 150, but the down hill made it seem shorter)
11 at Wild Horse (tough if you miss the pinned portion of the green)
12 at Doonbeg

I'll second the nominations for 14 at Doonbeg, 7 at PB, 2 and 9 at Kingsley and 11 at PacD.

...I'm thinking of ones that strike the terror even though the playing distance is routinely under 150.

Surely 10 at PVGC plays regularly at that mark ?

I'll second three that have already been mentioned
17th Sawgrass
8th Royal Troon
11th Shinnecock

Jason Topp,

you've played both Barbougle an Kingsley, any similarities between #2 at Kingsley and #7 at Barnbougle?

Also, have we met?

No similarities that I can think of.  2 at Kingsley is basically a do or die short iron shot.  7 at Barnbougle features a green angled to the line of play with a big bunker short and left and a big bailout area right.  One needs to either commit to going for the pin or bailout and accept that a 3 will be difficult.

I'll be interested to hear what guys at this weekend's GCA outing think of the 17th at Ballyhack.  It's a fantastic short hole.
