Masters All Day?
« on: April 09, 2010, 11:08:14 AM »
I know that Masters.com has some streaming, but it's a real shane that some channel has not had full coverage at Augusta.  The Masters is a tournament that I believe people would settle in all day and watch coverage for hours.  I know ESPN has coverage from 4-7:30, but most of us golf nuts would love to watch live coverage from first group to last.

i beleive the augusta club actually limits the amount of tv coverage they allow. Its very tightly controlled even down to the length and number of ad breaks.

I even heard that the BBC are limited to their radio coverage due to stipulations that Augusta put on it.

Mark,

You're probably correct.

Sure the TV would be great right now as it took my computer 10 minutes to finally catch the feed from amen corner.

They are coming around. It wasn't so long ago that you couldn't even see the front nine on Sunday. Now you get to see nearly all of the leaders on the weekend and great internet options for watching when TV coverage isn't going.

For a course who's attitude really seems to be "more is more", they do a good job of understanding that, when it comes to access, less is more.

Exactly. They aren't going to ask CBS/ESPN to go minimal commercials for 10 hours.

Rick,

Are you aware of the internet coverage on CBS.com? It really is quite good with a choice of viewing options.

And I am so happy that I have a double screen on my computer at work. I can screw off and watch the Master while I am screwing off on CGA.com. Multi-tasking at its best!

For what it is worth, I think they are doing a great job of broadcasting this thing on tv.  Limited interuptions, talking about the course itself and the nuances, talking about the history, the past players, etc.  Pretty cool.  And I get a real sense that the announcers/former players have a real love in their heart for the course/club.

One random thought...do you think ANGC doesn't allow early Thursday and Friday coverage to shield the past champions (and/or the young amateurs) for being on tv and embarrassing themselves?  They go there and get to enjoy themselves but don't have to get posted all over the world hitting poor shots and hitting 10 over par.  Perhaps I am way off base, but maybe not.

My understanding is they feel they have a better product if it's not overexposed.

No, I believe that Augusta National is an anachronism.  They are elitist, control freaks who because of their finances can do what they want, including their history of discrimination.  Tiger is a perfect fit, although quite ironic for obvious reasons.

Any golf organization that is so in control that traps must be called bunkers or you're gone is simply out of control.  Never mind bikini wax.  Oh yes, no spectators, only patrons.  Remember Jim Mckay at Baltusrol in 1980 calling the exuberant gallery 'the huddled masses'?  Oh well, he would be gone too.

One may not watch the tournament with any expectation of journalism.  Just tow the Augusta National line and all is fine.  Never mention their elitism.  Never mention their discriminatory history or for that matter current practices.  Hello Martha Burke (although certainly not the best woman to push the issue).  Great tournament.  Great course.  Frankly a club that epitomizes the public's view of golf.  And that is unfortunate. When a course is proposed in your community and there is vehement opposition, think why. and then thank Augusta National as one reason that people have biases against golf.

If you want to add some humor to watching the Masters, tune into Geoffs website live blog during the tournament.

Today Dan Jenkins participated and then about an hour after finishing, Ian Poulter blogged.
