The Masters is an invitational tournament.

If you believe an invitee no longer deserves his invitation (for whatever reason - ANGC sets the rules), you retract it. And go about your business.

What you don't do is invite someone to your tournament and then, while he is your guest, complain about his prior behaviour.

So Dave I suppose if you heard about one of your coworkers screwing around outside his marriage you'd wait until the next time a bunch of your colleagues and clients were gathered for a meeting so you could stand up, clear your throat and deliver a full-bore denunciation of his moral failings. I mean somebody's got to stand up for what's right.

What I find amazing about Payne's comments is how delightful ANGC is that Tiger decided to have The Masters as his first event. On that front the folks there were all smiles to reap the bonanza of attention they have gotten.

Then just as qukcklly Payne decides to play the moral knight role and slap Tiger around to demonstrate how ANGC is repulsed by such actions.

Nothing like having it both ways.

Righteous indignation and moral judgment aren't necessarily bad things. Preening and moralizing about another's private behavior at a golf press conference are.

This world needs selfish, crappy behavior to be called out more often, not less.  Good for Billy Payne.

There is a time and a place for everything though.  Festivus should start with the Airing of the Grievances, not the US Masters.

I kind of applaud them actually. What did Payne say that was unfair, malicious, or false?
As the chairman of ANGC, he is expected and encouraged to comment openly and honestly about golf issues.
Tiger's been protected from way up high for his entire career, paid hundreds of millions before he ever hit a golf ball and has allowed himself  to be passed off as some sort of exalted being. The guy who is sent to change the world or some such nonsense.
While doing so , he has a history of behaving quite boorishly overall along with his team, self centered, calculating, self serving. Always about what's good for him. And Nike, whose empire until he came along , was diminished. Great golfers sell goods but great stories sell more goods.
Yet we're supposed to sit by and excuse things away when the bubble breaks?

Don't forget, ANGC is  providing him as sheltered a return to golf as he can get. I'm quite sure ANGC has had to go to extra efforts on his behalf.
I think he's getting treated quite fairly  and objectively overall.

And Tiger's personal life constitutes golf issues? If you and Billy believe this, then maybe you and Billy should take note of what Martha is saying...

Moralizing may or may not be a good thing, but in this context? AT a press conference? About someone's personal private life? Bad. Definitely Bad.

Shivas,

Bob Crosby got it right.

You don't invite a guest to your event, and then villify him in public.

It's in poor taste.

And, some of the biggest stars on the ANGC/Masters stage have done what Tiger has done, only, they were protected, not outed by the media and others.

Let he who is without sin (currently or retro-actively) cast the first stone  ;D

Well, it is poor form to invite a guy to your party then ambush him in public, regardless if what is said is factual.  I would also question if Payne, as the Chairman, is speaking for himself or the club.  It seems like personal comments made under the guise of the chairmanship.  That said, I don't feel at all sorry for Tiger.  He made his bed..., but there was no need for Payne to make it even messier before Tiger got in it.

OK, here is the way I see it.

Everybody knows there have been many previous champions who are known to be "popular with the ladies". Add to that fact many of the Augusta members are titans of the industry who are also known to keep a mistress or two around. So when Payne comes out and admonishes Tiger for his behavior, I see it as an admonishment for getting caught and not necessarily for what he got caught doing. Kinda lame, especially when it is delivered in such blustering manner.

I think he could have said everything he said in a constructive tone and it would have been received much better.

Richard, that's a very fair observation.

Yet Tiger's "indiscretions" have turned out to be so indiscreet that they are the 500-pound elephant in the room. No CEO or former Masters champ has ever been outed in such an embarrassing way. Payne almost had to comment, and the unspoken message to Tiger was, "We don't do loose-lipped pancake waitresses, porn stars, hookers and party hostesses who will go to the National Enquirer for $10,000."

Maybe he could have told Tiger that in private, but now he's on the record. I'm sure the case is now closed, unless Tiger chooses to re-open it.

If you feel so confident with Tiger why do you not show him your other cheek? Or do you fear he has not been totally rehabilitated and any port in a storm option may still apply. ;)

That’s a joke not to be take seriously, as I know what some fans may do for their heroes. :-X

Melvyn, I don't know about "other cheek" but I still happily purchase TW equipment, clothing, and accessories, especially when they are on sale.

As I have said before, what he does privately (unless he is breaking a law or violating golf rules) is of no concern to me. My dissapointment with Tiger came a decade before when he decided to take the Michael Jordan approach to his status (will not take any stance on social issues that will have any negative impact on his sponsors). I watch the guy because he is the best golfer on the planet. Not because he is a great dad or a moral role model.

As unlikely as it seems given the stature and sophistication of many of these people who run ANGC, the chairmen of the place seem to have an odd way of saying things that create a whole lot more controversy than if they'd just refrained from saying anything on various subjects at the time.

First Chairman Hootie Johnson creates way more controversy for ANGC than was probably necessary by responding as he did to the apparent membership policies confrontation from Mrs Burke and now Chairman Payne with Tiger Woods.

Perhaps the chairmen of ANGC should more carefully consider Oscar Wilde's interesting adage that was something to the effect of:

"In society it does one well to know the precise moment when to say nothing!"

Richard, with all due respect, that's such a broad-brush generalization, it's nothing but a load of baseless crap.  Name one titan of industry member of ANGC that is known for a fact to keep a mistress or two around....you can't.  Why?  Because you're stereotyping.  Baselessly, I might add.

You can call it broad-brush if you would like. I know for a fact a certain mis-behavior of a prominent Augusta member personally, but I am not going to reveal anything about it because it is none of my business.

I wonder when Payne is going to call a press conference on that one. Oh, that's right, he never will.
