Just wondering if anybody has any experience playing the old course as a single walkup? Whats the best way to go about it? Whats the usual waiting time?

Has anybody had any success turning up in the afternoon and playing?

Sorry if this is a repeat topic i am  curious as what my people think is the best way to go about it.

I was told by the starter when I was there last July that Thursday is the quietest day, followed by Tue/Wed.

I arrived at 11.20am and was on the tee at 11.50am - 30mins was scarcely enough to get myself sorted and calm down enough to keep it inside the LHS OOB fence on #1 , Though my name was put on the list for me at about 10.45am, so I guess it was strictly an hour's wait, but I guess they weren't going to call me at 11.05am and then tell me I missed out when I got there!

awesome. thanks gents. Given what you say I think my current plan is land at Edinburgh from JFK via Amsterdam on an overnight flight, check in at the B&B and go staight to the course to play in the afternoon as the fiance has a sleep. I am sure i will be pretty tired but it will be worth i have no doubt!

I'll try the same thing this summer in August - spend a couple of days in St Andrews and walk out to the Old Course on a few of those afternoons.

 Ulrich,

   I went there in August on a Saturday about 1:30. They told me that there was an opening at 4:45. I came back and played then. Then on Monday I did the 6:30 in the morning thing and was given a 11 o'clock. In each instance I was able to return to my b+b in the interim.
