The blind tee shot on #8 is across the dune and pretty much to the east.  The drive on #12 is more to the SE.  The approach shots are pretty similar.

Bill,

Did you play the Reverse Cypress Point? Cool!!!! ;)

Sean, was I geographically challenged?

Yessir. Tee shot on 8 goes west and drive on 12 goes a bit northwest. I think your bearings are off since you switched coasts....Perfectly understandable.

Ron,

The emotional scars have yet to heal.

You have to wonder how many actually make it across ? Plenty of Titleists I'm sure have come to a watery grave there....

Is your World Atlas of Golf handy?   ;D

Assuming that #16 plays due south, parallel to the ocean, then #8 tee shot is way more south than west (SSW) and #12 is more west than south but generally WSW.

Of course we all remember that "assume makes an ass out of you and me."  And I could be all wet, like my four tee balls on #16!   ::)

18 looks forced. Am I wrong? Are the trees too much?
It seems ok that you must finish somewhere. Is there no better whay to end a round on such a beautiful piece of real estate?

Does #12 play similar to #8?  They both look to be dogleg rights around a dune where the better angle is to the inside off the tee?  I guess #12 is longer and #8 looked more uphill for the approach, but I'm just curious.  They both look awesome.  Do they play in similar wind directions?

Link, you can find an aerial here: http://www.golfblog100.com/2010/04/cypress-point-club.html

Bill,

thanks again Jim - great pics and story as well

As well as the golf course - is the weather always perfect at CPC - most pics seem to have it that way - do many have their rounds ruined by nasty weather?

For that matter - is Monterey always blue skies?

On that day what club/s did you take on 16?

Gareth/George,

I've attached the link to Jim's blog below relative to his experience on the 16th at CPC.

I'm sure you'll both enjoy the read.

I've hit an 18 degree hybrid on both occasions. It is a very intimidating shot, difficult to concentrate with such sensory overload going on.

Somehow I managed to par it both times. Certainly more down to luck than judgement.

This is a wonderful thread, I will try and get some pics up of my own in due course.

Had a magical moment on the 16th nearly 30 years ago. Brought my Nikon with my favorite 135mm lens and when we got to the 16th tee set my caddie up to snap my tee shot (back tees) at 1/1000th of a second. Remarkably he got the ball frozen 3' off the clubhead. Even more improbably, I pured the shot. The line from my clubhead through the frozen ball was directly on the flagstick. It was a beautiful morning with about a 10 knot breeze coming directly in from the sea. I hit my trusty Tony Penna persimmon driver to 18' and lipped out the birdie putt for a commercial par. A "one off", as my English buddies would say. The photo is framed in my bathroom today, and the more I think about it, the more I come to believe it was a several thousand to one shot that I'd both pure it and the caddie would snap it perfectly. As they say with the NY Lottery - "Hey, you never know....."

Brett,
the car park as we arrived...

and the view from the first tee...

Luckily it cleared up by the second hole!

cheers,

Fabulous video of the two kiwi golfers at Cypress Point. Aside from giving goose bumps watching it, it also shows that 18 is not as bad a hole as everyone makes it out to be. Despite the tagline to the contrary - Cypress is the best 18 hole (not 17 hole) course in the world. Enjoy. John

Great video....I'm sure it's a day those guys will never forget.

They need to get rid of the NY/NY music, though.  They're in California!!
