Lahinch in Pictures
« on: April 06, 2010, 06:46:59 PM »
Here are some pictures of Lahinch I took last July during my first visit.  I knew Lahinch was going to be a great golf course, but honestly, it blew me away in terms of just how good it is.  There are very few places I've had more fun golfing, than at Lahinch.

The blind, uphill drive at the par 4 3rd.

The uphill drive through the dunes at the par 5 4th.

The landing area at the 4th, with the Klondyke on the right hand side.

Behind the par 4 6th green

The back box at the par 4 7th.  The 3rd through the 7th at Lahinch has got to be one of the world's best stretches of golf holes.

Behind the 7th green.

The uphill par 3 8th

The par 4 9th green.

The downhill par 3 11th.

The 11th green and pot bunker

The fairway of the par 5 18th

I absolutely love Lahinch. This is probably blasphemy but I prefer it to Ballybunion. Also blasphemy but I like the changes Hawtree made....

Jim,

Great Pix!  Brings back a lot of memories...I came off #4 green pretty pleased with myself that I'd gotten up and down for birdie until one of our guys in the following group holed out blind for double eagle!

That second shot over the Klondyke at # 4 is pretty cool.  Double eagle!  What a memory for your buddy.

Great pictures Jim - the course is looking fantastic. When was  your round? Its amazing how (naturally) high the rough gets in the earl summer. Love the tinges of brown short of the 9th and 18th greens :)

I rank it up there with County Down and Muirfield as one of the best links in GB & I. Though I must admit; I am biased.

How wide are the fairways in those pictures?  It is hard to tell from the photos how wide they are surrounded by those magnificent dunes.

Thanks for the pics.

Patrick -

My round was the second week of July, last year.  I agree I would put Lahinch pretty much in the same class as Royal County Down and Ballybunion.  I haven't seen Muirfield, so I can't make that comparison.  I thought the turf was perfect when I played, and I loved the opportunity to use the ground game.  The ground there has such wonderful movement.

Greg -

The drive at the 4th is pretty narrow, as evidenced in the pictures.  It was one of those deals where I didn't know how tough that drive was until after I played it, and that was a good thing.  Had I known how narrow the landing area is, I probably would have blown it up into the dunes.  However, on the rest of the holes, I felt like I had some room to operate, especially on the back nine, which has more holes playing inland.  Lahinch isn't wide open, you've got to strike the ball well, but I felt it was a very fair balance in terms of width.  Patrick, who lives in Lahinch, could speak more to this point than I can.

Jim,

The photo tours of your Ireland trip have been excellent.  It sounds like your trip was a huge success.  How was the driving?  ;)

Lahinch looks pretty narrow to me.  Was it reasonable to keep your ball in play from the tee?  Thanks for letting us share in your trip.

Patrick excuse me if I've got this wrong, but weren't you the guy taking us through it hole by hole?  If my memory is not completley shot the thread was never finished?

Pretty please? ;)

Great photo's of a truly great course.

Lahinch doesn't have the bad holes that Ballybunion has, yet without Tom Watson singing its praises, sadly doesn't have the profile.  ::)

The bunker by the 8th green, front left, looks different to that built by Martin Hawtree 5 or so years ago. I know they had trouble keeping the face from collapsing. Have they changed the bunker again? Anyone?

I'll go along with the suggestion that along with Muirfield and RCD, it's about as good as you can find in the UK, although would throw Portrush and Woodhall Spa into the mix.

John,

I believe they revetted the bunkers at 7 and 8 greens because of wind blow problems... I'm sure Hawtree were involved in the decision...

I don't think Ballybunion has bad holes but I agree that the two par-5's are a weak link... I also agree that Lahinch doesn't have any section that lets the course down... However, where Ballybunion excels is in its wonderful green complexes - It has very few peers in that regard...

All that being said, Lahinch is perhaps my absolute favourite place to play golf........

With respect, Ally, the first is just a hole with the quirk value of a cemetery on the right, the second shot on the second is outstanding, but the beginning is nothing special, holes 4 to 6 are hardly worthy of being considered adequate on a golf course regarded as highly as Ballybunion is.

Well if you really want to argue it, I think that the 6th is an outstanding hole... I think the 5th is well bunkered (or at least was before Watson peppered it with some unneccesary extra bunkers), I think the 3rd is a wonderful par-3 and I think the first is seriously underrated with the two centreline bunkers and the approach shot depending very much on pin position and angle... The 4th is average...

But I agree, it's not the most spectacular part of the site... But neither is the 9th... and to me, that's the best hole on the course...

Not arguing, just offering an opinion.

Do a hole by hole comparison of the first 6 at Ballybunion and Lahinch and I'm sure most reasonable people would consider those holes at Lahinch vastly superior to those further south. And the quality of their last 12 is at least comparable.

I'd agree with that

I probably wouldn't agree with that

Played Lahinch twice in wind and rain and loved every bit of it.  It looks like you were blessed with sun - how was the wind?

David -

The wind was down, maybe a club to a club and a half during the round.  I played early in the morning, so that probably helped.  It was a bit overcast at the start of the round and at the end of it, with wonderful sunshine in between.

I would never describe Lahinch as narrow. We play it in some significant wind & always find it playable. I would say the 4th is visually more intimidating in comparison to how it actually play. The fairway is set in a natural valley & shots up the right/left will kick back down into the fairway. The only links course I have ever felt claustrophobic on is Portrush & that is a function of the members growing the rough in rather than particularly narrow playing corridors.

Shout out to the green keepers in Lahinch - they keep the course in amazing condition. :)

   Looks narrow.

My first thought as well. Considered me frightened, agreeing with Anthony straight out of the box... :)

The narrow comments make me chuckle. EVERY course looks much narrower in 2 dimensions than it is.

A very good point Sean - I remember seeing pictures of the 2nd hole at Pine Valley & thinking that the fairway was a sliver between bunkers/trees. In actuality there is plenty of good to hit your ball!

Gorgeous.  But yikes that is some thick-looking long grass!  And we sneer at the long "US Open roughs" at places like Winged Foot, Oakland Hills or Pebble Beach...

I expect that 3.5 hour rounds are expected at Lahinch but does that include every player having to locate one or two lost balls?
