I had the honor to walk a family friend down the aisle in West Virginia this past weekend so I thought it was time to return to my golfing roots. As a child my father would take us to a small, rugged 9-holer in the hills of WV. Most of the time was spent looking in the creek for crawdads, but there was golf to be had. The course was called White Day and it was kept by Ivan Hayhurst. Ivan's posture was of a question mark, most likely from his labors at the course, which made him look even smaller than he was. With size 4 shoes he put his heart and passion into his baby. A friendly place where still today 10year olds and younger play for free. A course with a heartbeat. Natural and minimalistic, and usually fast and firm due to the lack of watering.
White Day lies in two counties. Monongalia and Marion. Birthplace of notable sport figures NFL Hall of Famer Frank Gatski(12 seasons..11 tittle games), Nfl Hall of Famer Sam Huff, Bama coach Nick Saben, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez,Final Four coach Bobby Huggins, coaches Terry and Tommy Bowden and Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton. Also it is the home of West Virginia University.

My father would tell me . "Watch Ivan"..."He is his own man and is working and living as he chooses". Little did I know then that how rare that is.
