The lost essay
« on: April 04, 2010, 10:22:56 AM »
Last year around this time an excellent essay by Daniel Wexler on the evolution of ANGC was posted under In My Opinion. There is no sign of it now, what happened to it?

Here is a link to the thread associated with the essay.

I went to reference it for a blog entry two days ago and it was gone.
I was going to write on the changes at the course and use the entry for help.

It was there recently because I read it this winter - I read one or two most weeks.

This begs an interesting question which is if one posts an "In My Opinion" piece on this website whose property is it; whose property should anyone consider it to be? I think Ran Morrissett has an opinion on that. So do I, I wonder if others do as well?  ;)

IIRC, at one point Dan was going to do a longer piece on the evolution of ANGC. I suspect he took down the piece he posted here in anticipation of the publication of that longer essay (book?). I don't know if he is still planning on doing something along those lines.

I wonder what happened to it.

As much as conspiracy theories are loved around here, my guess is it did not make it over when software platforms switched. The second half of my Mountain Lake article is missing too. First half made it over.

Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean there isn’t a conspiracy here.

I had bookmarked this old thread that explains how to find old and lost versions of pages using Google.

Someone with more computer savvy than me, might be able to find it using one of these.

thought I might be able to find this via archive.org but it looks like GCA hasn't been archived since 2008

I was there recently because I'm quite certain that I had read it in January when I had some spare time.

I think this comes with good news about another brilliant book by Mr. Wexler.
It makes a great chapter all in its own right.  :)

I guess no one has thought to simply ask Ran or Ben?

They don't exist - the site is run by a large faceless corporate entity. ;D

Ian:

Actually that's true. Ran Morrissett is a corporate name, not his real name.

I was speaking to him on the phone last month and the subject came up unexpectedly. His real name is pretty incredible though. It's Ferdinando Alolph Margerite Gregor MacFernie Muhammed Diablo. He is a combination of Sicilain, Austrian, Frisian, Prussian, Scottish, Egyptian and Spanish royalty going all the way back to the 12th century. After my surprise wore off, I did think to ask him what I was supposed to call him with a name like that one.

He said I could just call him Buddy if we were alone and Sir Buddy if anyone else was around.
